Life\'s better on a Branson

First, let me thank all of the Branson and Century owners who have posted here over the last few months. Your opinions and insight helped me make the decision on a Branson 4220 with FEL and 7620 BH.

The dealer delivered today! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif (For those in the PNW, I'll give a plug to Metro New Holland in North Plains, Oregon. They offered a fair price, an estabished dealership, and delivered to my shop for $24,500. Really easy to deal with, and excellent communications when some other dealers never answered my messages.)

I've been doing with a Ford 9N the last five years, and life is bettter on a Branson!! -- Did more in three hours this afternoon than I could have all day on the Ford. The first test was removing a large old-growth log (30 inches diameter by 25 feet length) that was partially buried. I had a local contractor with a Kubota mini-excavator try to remove it, and he said I would need a cat, but with the Branson the log was out of the hole in two hours. Wish I had gotten a picture -- the front wheels were 18 inches off the ground /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif until I got it onto level ground. A little too much pucker factor for the first day on the new tractor!

Thanks again to all -- I've learned a lot in the last couple of months.

Re: Life\'s better on a Branson

Jeff --

I didn't consider I was doing anything inherently very risky. The log was in a hole I had excavated with the BH, so was below the level of the tractor by about five feet. It was just the "angle of the dangle" on the drawbar that lifted the front wheels.

A local rancher who used to log with an 8N and rim spikes (serious traction /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif) advised me many years ago that I couldn't expect to get much work done with my front wheels on the ground all the time. With 50 years of tractoring behind him, I accepted the advice and he was right. I've gotten pretty used to brake steering my 9N when pulling logs or really digging in with the blade. Step on the clutch and she settles back down. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
