I'm trying to find the lifting capacities and breakout forces of my 430 loader on a 4310 tractor. I tried searching here and on JD web site with no luck.

It has been said that to increase the 2500psi operating capacity of the system you need to install a smaller size washer somewhere in the system. Where is this washer located so I could change it. I will be getting a gauge to check pressures but I might still want to increase by a couple hundred pounds maybe to 2700-2800 psi.

I have an older JD brochure and the specifications it gives for the 430 loader are:

Max lift height at pivot pin – 101.4”
Breakout force at pivot pin - 3299
Lift capacity at pivot pin (max height) - 1261

There are a number of threads from past discussions regarding "shimming" the hydraulic pump to increase operating pressure. A search on this forum as well as attachments, etc should give you some ideas about the pros and cons and how to proceed.

Please note the tales of caution. A couple of weeks back -- there was a post by a fellow who had "pumped it up" and had no idea how great the pressure setting was! He had blown out the seals on the loader cylinders and had fluid leaking from a number of sources!

Several of the old hands reasoned that he was working the FEL, etc. likely in excess of 3000 psi.

Thanks for the help guys. I'm going to hook up a gauge first before I do anything just to see where the pressure is and then I'll decide if I want to increase a little. There is no way I am willing to go over 3000 lbs because I just don't want to take the chance of hurting anything or even myself if it blows out.

Are you really hitting a limit on current capacity or is it too slow or what??? I can healp a bucket full of rock or soil and lift perfectly fine on my 300X. It is not my everyday job but it is PLENTY fast enough for me. Not sure what the advantage here is? Be careful and do not damage your awesome tractor or loader.

If your pressures are what they are supposed to be, you may have a bad relief valve if it's not lifting max load.

 by this statement...
The relief valve sets the max pressure in the system. So if the pressure is fine, then the relief valve is good.

Unless I missed something on TBN, the threads on shimming (shims, not washers) the relief valve concerned the 790 tractors which operate at about 2200 PSI (I think). I did it to my 790 and can't really say I've noticed that much of a difference. Adding a proper ballast on the 3PH made a big difference though.

Some folks here did quantify their lifting force by using bags of sand or cement before and after. That was as close to a "calibrated" weight as possible.

Why do you think your 430 loader is weak? Is this tractor new to you? Maybe you're expecting more then the tractor can do. If you've owned the tractor for a while and the loader seems weak, maybe there is something else worn in the system or it's time to replace your hydraulic fluid and filter.

I bought the tractor new and it now has about 300 hrs and fluids changed regularly. I thought I just remembered that the loader was stronger but I'm very possiblely wrong about the feel of the FEL. I just wanted to check the pressures and boost them up a little to see if it makes any noticable difference and if it doesn't then take them back out. You know everybody wants their FEL to lift 10000 lbs and work just like the big wheel loaders uprooting 2ft stumps and all that good stuff. I know that it is quite possible that I'm asking to much out of the loader but that's what I wanted to find out.
