I'm gathering in some (very) used implements, including this drill - which is actually in really decent shape where it counts.

However, the tires are shot and I don't know about the bearings, so I'd rather trailer it than attempt a 20-mile tow. Unlike the other implements which I just chained to and lifted with my FEL/forks, this one seems a bit more challenging to actually get hold of.

Any tips? I plan to remove the tongue and load it sideways on either my 16ft flatbed or larger gooseneck.

Just a quick thought...
Personally I would try to winch it onto the trailer...
Go to harbor freight and buy you a couple of cheap dollies to put under the tires...
You should be able to winch it up the trailer sideways if the dollies can ride over the edge of your trailer...
You may need to place some sort of ramp for the dolly to ride up on...

Also, I don't know how the balance of the drill will be affected when you remove the tongue...
If I remember correctly our old Van Brunt drill has fairly good tongue weight...
The drill may want to tip back without the weight of the hitch...

It looks to have a substantial angle iron frame so I would sling it by passing a strap or chain under it and between the drills to get a two point lift. This should keep your lifting chains or strap away from the hoppers to avoid any bending forces there.

What about using forks?

If it were me though I would just order new tires and bearings and fix it in the field and pull it home.

Thanks for the ideas, guys. Turby - it was tongue-heavy, even after removing the tongue.

We ended up using Gary's tip about the strap, but since there was the same sturdy angle running along the backside, we used the sling back there running end-to-end. It did pull slightly against the hopper lids, but the strap was easier on them than chain, with no issues. As you can see, we used chains for the front, and used the full length of the tines to get a balanced lift.

We did move very slowly, and backed the trailer under it rather than risk raising too high.

Sure is nice having the right equipment for the job.

Nice pick and no damage done. For some dumb reason I have never seen the pick-up side boxes used as you have done. Great idea. Uses no space yet keeps straps, chains. come alongs and various binders close at hand and under lock and key.

Thanks - yes, those boxes have been so useful for many years. We asked the trailer builder about how to store stuff, and mentioned we had these extra side boxes laying around...so he came up with the simple support brackets and welded them up while he was finishing the trailer. He even mounted the boxes for us...and I drove it off for $600. Guess that says how long ago that was. :)

I've always used one side for my chains, boomers & come-a-longs, and the other for hi-lift jack, jack stands, straps & dunnage.

The fact that the key/latch is on the inside has sometimes been inconvenient, but hey - it works.

Just to close out the story, here's another shot of how we used the strap on the backside of the drill.

You can see the detached tongue in the background...I was very pleased that all the bolts came loose with just a little elbowgrease; not one broken or rounded example.

Does anyone know how I can tell when this drill was built, or know the range of years? It's a FB157B, s/n 002088N.

thanks...Paul
