Lifting a tractor front end to pull a tire

I needed to pull one front tire so I looked in the owner's manual and then the shop manual, no instructions on where to use a floor jack. I ended up picking it up on the frame in the front and then putting a jack stand on the frame also.

Anyone know of a better idea? The tractor is an x585.

On my 425 I usually lift it using the front bumper/ frame weight bracket. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The frame is very heavy steel, so you can't hurt it wherever you put the jack. With parking brake on, wherever the jack will fit is good.
Good idea to put the jack stand under as well. I usually use a block or two of wood.

I use the loader and blocks when the front of the tractor has to be raised for work.

I do the same as Egon. Lift it by lowering the FEL until the front wheels lift and then use a couple 4x6 blocks under the axle.

I think his tractor is a large garden tractor, 4wd and suspect he doesn't have a FEL on it. Probably should have been in the Lawn and Garden section for better clarity. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Hard to know where the X585 fits in the CUT scheme of things. A few like me assume that most CUT's have FEL's on them. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Now, you didn't get your hands dirty jacking that up did you? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif May have with that greasy washer cap and stud that holds the tire onto the axle. Surprises me a bit that JD didn't put a grease zerk on that wheel. Must assume there is enough grease packed inside that it doesn't need more. I usually pack a little in each time I remove a wheel.

While preparing my 4210 for the mowing season I wanted to inspect the front tires and clean the inside of the rims of grease, so I used a 6 ton bottle jack and a wood block under the axle. Once the tire would clear the ground, I would place a jack stand under the axle and lower the jack until the axle almost touched the stand. My FEL had been removed so I didn't have that option.

Got a question for the other JD owners who have turf tires, does anyone ever rotate their tires from side to side on the same axle? I thought about doing that but didn't know if it served any purpose.

I lift the fronts with the FEL curled down and lift the rears with a floor jack under the appropriate side of the drawbar assembly. Both these work fine.

I'd think you could also lift the fronts with a jack underneath the front axle, but it would have to be a high lift or require quite a few blocks of wood that could fall over.
