I have been looking for someone that still makes this style of farm light. It is a shade approx. 12"-14" in diameter with a porcelin socket and a threaded hub that will take 1/2 pipe for mounting to a wall or ceiling. Does anyone have any ideas?

KC (MR. Barnes?), Unfortunately I don't know where to get them but also am interested in buying some and recommending them to my neighbors. They concentrate the light on the ground and don't waste any lighting up the night sky to contribute to light polution and the denial of dark skies to astrophotographers, romantics, and other endangered species. Maybe they aren't made any longer. I'm about to give up and try to build something for myself using galvanized sheet metal. Not as nice as the kind in your attachment that I am familiar with but better than the ones that put nearly half of the expensive light up in the sky where it can't help you.

They are called RLM type lights - no idea what RLM stands for but they are not the easiest things to find. I bought 2 of them last year and have yet to put them up. Mine are pole mounted fixtures that, as Patrick pointed out, shine the light down and not out. This makes for much better star-gazing and much less light pollution. The ones I have are from Spero Lighting and have a painted aluminum bonnet. I haven't found any sources for the enameled steel original style bonnets though you might find something in from an industrial supplier (big $$$$$). Search the Spero site for a type 901 Island Light or RLM series reflectors.

I have been looking for something like that also. Let us know If you find it. I also have a couple of Q's for you:

In the picture your walls and ceiling are painted white, wouldn't that be enough reflecting material without a shade?

If you find them and they end up costing $36.00 a piece would you spend another $14.00 for an 8 foot flourescent fixture?

PatrickG, sounds like you need to find some steel garbage can covers./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Thanks for the info so far guys, I have found that style in mcmaster-carr. Steve- the picture was taken at a friends place. The reason I want this style is more for nostalgic purposes than light output or I would look at an 8' light. Andy I will check out the site you gave, Thanks

Gotcha.

I went the Spero website and saw that fixture mounted on a shepherd's type hook it reminded me of something you see on an old pier. If nostalgiac/architectural is what you want that is probably the site to go to.

Thats just what I'm looking for. I am going to check with my local supply houses and see if they can get them. Our garage is going to have native sawn lap siding and I think the galvanized style will look great, thanks!
