I am looking at lights to mount on the side of my barn - 20" high, to light a horse ring. I just mounted a 100 watt Metal Halide flood light, good light, but doesn't light the entire area. I have the ability to go either 110 or 220, so my question. How much more area would be covered by a 400w? These are available in Metal Halide, in 110/220. How much heat do the bigger lights produce? The barn is covered in vinyl siding, I would hate to melt it.

From the barn to the furthest edge of the ring, is 100 - 150'.

Have no experience with those lights however think 20 feet is too low for a single source and that distance. Have you thought about placing lights around the arena? That would also help with shadows which think would make it safer also.

No idea there however here our electric company offers auto night lights they maintain for about $10 each per month. That includes all cost. If you only use the arena a few hours a month might not a good idea but if you use it a lot could be.

Check with the light company and see what they have to say about mounting a given fixture.

There are guidelines to figure out fixture height, required lumens(the amount of light from the bulb), and lighted square footage.

I used some of these guidelines when designing our house and they work.

Searching with
lighting design guide
pops up lots of hits.
outdoor lighting design guide
is also interesting. If you know that company that makes the fixtures that might simplify the searches.

Later,

i have a 200' x 80' arena and it took me (4) 1,000 watt MH and (4) 250 watt MH lights to get enough light to work.Mine are about 20-22' above the ground. I agree with the previous. Draw up a plot plan with exact dimensions and go visit a lighting supply or electrical wholesale house and they can get you a better idea.
