Lighting protection works well for static electricity, but there is too much energy in a direct lighting strike to have protection for. I have seen a ligthing bolt strike a tv snteena and swa the grounging wire melted into the roof. Of course the damage to the house was intense. I saw the resukts of a lighting strike to a new house, the strike followed the power line ine and every electrical outlet and light fixture was blown out of the wall and ceiling. Every nail in the roof was popped up through the shingles. Totally ruined the house. Lighting travels from sky downward, what you see is the retrace back to the sky.

Dang, makes me afraid to stay in my house during a lighting storm /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif !!! Maybe next time I"ll just run outside and hide under a big tree /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif . Seriously though, any of us who has experienced even a "minor" lighting strike knows the damage they can cause to a house, let alone you. We have had a couple "close calls" over the years, and sometimes you keep finding damaged electrical stuff days and even weeks after the event. Luckily our insurance (good neighbor guy) has always taken care of us well /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

If you are building talk to the power company. Ask them if you are building in a lightning prone area, and if you are ask the for help. They will look at were you are building and see what they can do to help. When lightning get on the system it will travel until it can get to ground . If you are at the end of the line you will get what they can't get read of ! Which can be very bad at times.

Power Protection & your home: I have to say guys I am in the IT Industry (sales side) and a UPS or Surge Power Strip is your best, cheapest and smartest thing for any home electronics you don't want to loose. APC, goto www.apcc.com
is one of the best and they offer very good warranty/insurance coverage against failure. I have their Surge Arrest units for my home electronics (TV's etc) and a BackUps for my PC.

Don't go the cheaper brand, go APC. Warranty, value and long term protection. Visit Best Buy, Comp USA, Office Max, Staples etc.
