Lipan Motor To Replace A Blown Tecumsa On Walk Behind Blower???

A guy I know is giving me his 26" walk behind MTD snowblower that has a blown Tecumsa 11 hp. The machine is in nice shape besides the motor. I found this on Fleabay and was wondering if anyone has any knowledge of these motors made by LIPAN? 13 hp electric start for $350, the price is right or so it seems. It looks like I can mate this right up the existing frame with little modification. What have you heard or seen about these motors and can you get parts without swimming to China? Thanks.

Never heard of lifan myself, but things you may need to be aware of:

- Height to center of crankshaft (where pulley will ride)
- The existance of a suitable governor on the lifan to allow the engine to recover when a load of snow is fed into auger.
- Size / diameter of out put shaft where pulley will ride.
- The position of the pulley on the output shaft to allow the belt to run true with the bottom pulley

Just some things to measure and measure again

Can't remember if Tecumseh ever extended the cam shaft for use as transmission drive. If they did does the lifan offer this feature?

I haven't even gone and looked at the pully and shaft yet. The nice part is that it is free and waiting for me and the guy says he liked it a lot more than the replacement he got last winter. That lifan motor sure does look like a Honda. While I'm sure it isn't I read somewhere that most Honda's are made by some outfit in China for them under strict quality controls ect. Too bad I couldn't find that page again but it was at work, I got called away and never got back to it. The guy selling them seems to gave a stellar record and the others sold around the net seem the same at a glance. As to fit and applicability I would measure it up and then call him and ask about it before ordering. I would just find a surplus Tecumseh I never liked them much and wasn't impressed with their quality. The motor on the unit is 11 HP and this is a more modern 13 which should eliminate the bogging.problem . I have a 1000 ft driveway and only want it for backup and touchup work. My main weapon is a Ferguson TO20 with 7' blade .

Do not waste your money!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Buy Tecumsa snow blower motor from Northern or engines direct or who ever.

Same as the engines Harbor freight selss and they have gotten pretty good reviews. I have a 6.5 HP that powers a pressure washer. never a hiccup. HF also sells a 13 hp.

Also, if you end up buying an engine with a 3/4 shaft but need a 1 inch shaft, you can buy a "sleeve" or adapter at almost any small engine shop for around $20.

Are there any Harbor Freight stores near you? If so I would buy from them so if you have a problem with it you can return it easily. I replaced one with a Briggs but most of the newer engines have the cylinder at an angle so to use it I had to relocate the shaft for the cute rotation. Another thing you may have to deal with is the bolt pattern to mount it may be the same but the thickness of the back of the motor could be different so you may need to relocate the engine to get the pulleys to line up correctly.

I would have thought that a company would have stepped up to make a replacement for the Tecumseh engines on snow blowers. There must be millions of them out there.

I've heard that Honda parts will fit on these engines but don't know for sure. I wouldn't buy an engine that I couldn't get parts for. For that reason I wouldn't buy a Tecumseh for a replacement or an engine off of ebay that I wasn't sure I could get parts for. Snow blowers have a nasty habit of gumming up carbs (I think in part due to the Ethanol in the gas) so I would want to be sure I wasn't stuck at the beginning of snow season trying to get parts.

But before doing anything get the snow blower and remove the engine so you know exactly what you need before you buy. MTD had some funny shaft setups.
