I don't want to beat a dead horse (in fact I'd never beat any horse)...

If you want info on the Super UDT vs UDT debate you can search the archives and get a lot.

What I'm asking is if you agree this idea has merit, to use the strength of this forum by as many of you as possible calling your local Kubota dealer (saves me from calling 200 of them long distance!) to see what kind of consensus,if any exists on this.

Maybe ask someone in service and/or ask parts if they sell it (may get different answers) The question to them would be an inquiry into which they recommend and why/why not.

You could post the dealer name or city. (or not) I know last year I got varied answers. The fellow that recently posted on the amsoil/delvac thread about not using synthetics (his dealers recommendation) is interesting when I had thought that Super UDT was a synthetic, designed for those cold mornings and climates a lot of tractors face.

If no one wants to do this, I'll continue my search for the holy grail on my own, but I think it would be interesting.

Dig On!

Del; Just so happens that I brought up this very subject to my Service Department a few weeks back, when I was picking up an oil filter for my 100 hrs maintenance. Just for a sanity-check, I had to re-ask.

Location: Frederick, Maryland. What they stated:
They do not stock Super-UDT, but they will special order upon request. Super-UDT has merits for extreme cold climates (they didn't specify what extreme is), and has no value for conditions in Maryland. They do not use it in the Service Department. For all service, on all units, they use UDT.

Addendum: If it really is cold related, then it makes more sense doing this by Temperate Zones. Attached (next post) the NA low-temperature zones. I am in Zone 6.

Roy,
I guess I'm in zone 2. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif You just gave me a cold shiver when I look at the map,and maybe that why I drink so much coffee.

I went to pick up some fluid yesterday, asking my dealer as I didn't know which was in my L3710HST. His only query was "Is it an HST" - then use Super-UDT. They stock both but have probably twice as much UDT on the shelf as Super. Will have to ask for more details next time I'm in. Tends to be a bit chilly here (single digits not uncommon in the last few nights) so that may be part of it.

My dealer (Crytzer Equipment, PA) doesn't stock Super UDT.
He says they only use UDT in the service department and said we don't need it here because it doesn't cold enough to be of benifit. He wanted $75 to order a five gallon bucket, so I went through tractorsmart.com who has it for >$61. Yes, I'm going to use Super UDT, since that is what the manual recomends.

Del; The answer may lie in building a table, with the number of respondents in each temperate zone responding 'UDT Dealer' or 'Super-UDT dealer'. So far the responses look like this:

Zone | UDT | Super-UDT
1
2
3
4......|........| 1
5......|2......|
6......|1......|
7
8
9
10
11

Since MO and PA are split between Zones 5 & 6, but mostly 5, I put them down as 5's.

Thomas; If I lived in Zone 2, I would have to add a drop of antifreeze to my coffee /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif.

I live in CT, that is the orange zone on the map, didn't see any numbers on the map. My dealer stocks both UDT and Super UDT with plenty of both. Never even thought of asking their opinion since it says in the manual to use the Super UDT.

Just to put this thing to rest, I am going to venture out on a limb. In addition to the above postings, I received a couple of off-line responses. Now, the sample size is very, very small (we didn't get close to the 200 that Del was looking for). Not enough for a non-parametric test, much less than enough to satisfy parametric sampling requirements.

Value-add of Super-UDT is for extreme cold weather climates. A northern US dealer confirmed this offline. Let me say, this makes sense to me. Kubota Corporation is warranting the equipment. If there was some other issue, I really don't believe that they would allow the dealers in warmer climates to use UDT instead. They receive the orders; they know what the dealers are stocking.

Warm and fuzzy part of the analysis: Super-UDT has no advantages in Cold Temperate Zones 5 through 11 (Andy - you have to scroll down the map to see the zone numbers). Super-UDT performs better for the colder temperatures for Zones 1 through 3. Zones 4 and 5 seem to be a toss-up.

Cold is relative. I consider it cold when it dips below freezing, and it very rarely stays that way for long. Yesterday, it was a balmy 59. Today, it's freezing temperatures and calling for a major snowstorm. Wednesday it's supposed to be back in the 50's. (My parents moved to Anchorage 6 years ago, I have only visited them in the summer, they only visit me in the fall/winter).
