Do you miss the old days when buying a vehicle the first thing you did was ask "What engine does it have"? Ahh, 327, 350, 383, 409,and so on.

If your like me, that being "old school", when you look at today's cars & trucks they list what was formally cubic inches in liters now for engines. Just what the heck are they talking about? Most people don't have a clue as to what size engine their getting now days, including the sales force.... just ask them. "Oh , a big one, 4 liter". Yeah right.

To help you sort this out the next time your discussing this stuff or to satisfy your curiosity, there is 61 cubic inches in a liter. Or to simplify just multiply 60 X liters and you'll have a pretty good idea of what your looking at.

Our car is a 76Ci - 1.25 Litre.

I know what you mean. Back in the 60s & 70s almost every engine was a V8 above 5 litres. Now if you have anything bigger than a 2 litre it is considered massive.

Just doesn't seem right to say I have a 109.8 CI engine in my MC vs I have an 1800cc engine. Now I have to brush up on my math tables for 61. :D

Funny this thread popped up.

I was reading some car reviews last night and on the drive to work I was trying to "convert" 5.7L to cubic inches. :D Figure 5.7 must be about 350 CI engine.

They sure are getting some serious HP out of todays engines. My z28 had a 5L aka 305 CI engine. It was an HO engine. High Output!

A whopping 190 HP! But it was haul fanny that is for sure. Course the car was very light with now power seats, power windows, power locks, etc. :D

Later,
Dan

I grew up with cc's and liters (same thing) as well as cubic inches so its just ingrained for the V-8's what the conversions are. Smaller than the 302 ci, I'm all in liters, I have no clue what a 1.3L or 2.2L or any other common 4 cyl is in ci.

Its kind of like temps, grew up metric, so air temps are all in Celcius, but pools still all have degrees F. I know the cold pool when we were little would be as low as 56 F, and was a lot nicer when 78 F or more. Never bothered to learn the conversion to C. Hmm, 56 is 13.3 C, wow, thats cold, no wonder we turned blue.

If you fly it is even more confusing. Speed is in nautical miles per hour, wind speed is also knots, however, some distances are in standard miles. Altitude is feet, and pressure and temperature are metric (Celsius). When I was taking flight training it seemed ridiculous and made calcutions even more difficult. The FAA does not like change.

Simple way to convert F to C in you head is to take the F temp, subtract 32, divide result by 2 and add 10% of that number.

i.e. 212F - 32 = 180. 180/2 = 90. 90 +10% (9) = 99. It's within 1 degree.

C to F 100C -10% = 90 Double 90 = 180. Add 32 to 180 + 212.

Anybody with Win7 has a converter built into the calculator direct from Microsoft.

A great program that converts many measurements. Not just Metric > Imperial.
