Or limb (vine is the worst) or water in exhaust when you cranked up or something tender like a hand grabs it. I think the top exhaust may put noise closer to your ear also.

Well I've only owned 2 tractors in my time, I do remember back in the 60's visiting my Grandparents on their farm seeing old tractors and things on them I do not see on todays tractors, Like the ones that had that great big Brake hub up on the side, and the seats that either set way off the rear or to one side of the tractor with the steering wheel over to one side as well........... One thing I dont have on my Yanmar that I did have on the old Kubota, was a Mushroom looking air breather sticking up thru the hood, it didn't matter how many time I would go to open the hood I would always forget to pull that thing off first,:D needless to say I dont miss having to do that ;)

The stack above the hood was about the only thing left on our beast when she went to the big scrap yard in the sky! :D

I did like seeing that smoke belch when the power came on, though.

If I understand you correctly we call those "big brake hub"'s a "cathead". We used an old AC (I forgot what model, also no 3PH & had a hand clutch) which had one and we'd use the cathead to run our feed grinder by way of a large belt. That tractor was gasoline powered and used mainly for raking hay and grinding feed. I also recall the old Ford 9000 with "selecto-matic". As a youngster I thought it was real cool when I had to go to the barn by way of the state highway. I'd get that old tractor out on the road and start gearing up and put the fuel to her and watch that black smoke come bellowing out...in my face!:D

Hee hee. I liked that tractor. IH2500b. 50PTO HP tractor loader. HST tranny. It was beat to heck when I got it and I beat it a tad more! Very strong running unit, but a bazillion hours on it. The HST was still running strong. I believe it was manufactured in the mid to late 70's. 4 cylinder gas engine. Cab was nice in winter, but man, HOT in summer! :) I was going to fix 'er up and then sell her. Was planning on getting about $3500 after completion. Went to an IH tractor salvage yard and found all the castings and such that were broken. I would have had to put about $1600 in parts into it. The salvage yard guy then says, how about I buy the tractor from you for $1600 instead of you repairing it? I think about, oh, 5 seconds and calculate that's only $300 less than I want and no labor on my part..... SOLD!

So now she lives on in other tractors as repair parts. :D The guy said they'd pull it into the bay and start stripping it. Every part is inspected, measured and, if it is good, cataloged. Bad parts go in the scrap bins. They really have a large selection of IH parts. Bates Corporation - International Harvester Tractor Parts Specialists
