John Deere BW
I have a 1949 John Deere model BW tractor, using a live hyudraulic pump mounted between the governor and the magneto. The pump operates a 45W loader and a Charlyn power steering unit. The pump has stopped working, which renders the tractor useless. (can't lift the bucket, can't steer the tractor) Can anyone steer me to a repair shop that can service (rebuild) this pump?

Can you post a couple of photos so the details of the power steering are more apparent.

True hydrostatic system or a steering assist system.

Did the pump stop working suddenly? where does the pump suck its oil from. Often suction screens gradually plug up and finally one day do not allow anything through.

Rebuilding old pumps is not often done. A new one will be proven solution. Of course finding one can be the challenge.

Is the pump driven by a gear from the front of the engine?

I would rather take a little time to confirm your diagnosis that the existing pump is bad.

I am 72 and was 3 years old when your tractor was built so there are not many still around with first hand experience on a 1949 BW.

I see some lovely full restorations of 1949 BW's on youtube.

Have you looked for any John Deere restoration groups on line.

Here is one link to look at.

Here's the parts schematic for the live hyd pump. I didn't locate a sump screen & I doubt tractor of that era had a screen. I suggest to yoke(key 31) & shifter pin(key 46)

Jim,
Thank you again. I was able to download the schematic and print it out. It should prove very useful.

Dave,
This is a link to my youtube video of the tractor. 1949 John Deere BW Completed - YouTube

Thanks for sharing the video. The skill to do a restoration of that quality is far beyond both my skill and patience

My friends who restore motorcycles and cars, complain that today's paints are too good to replicate what the vehicle looked like when it came off the assembly line.

The finish on your Deere looks incredibly green and shiny.
What are tractor restorers' thoughts on paints?

The farmers who used the loader with a trip bucket are all amazed!

Thanks Dave, the finish is Dupont Imron. I am not sure they even make it anymore as it was quite toxic. But it lasts outdoors very well. It was a favorite amongst aircraft owners, as many planes sit outside. The gloss is as sprayed, not buffed out. The bucket cylinders are a definite plus. I just have to get the hydraulics working again. The tractor is at my son's house, a bit of a ride, so I need to get over there and try to do some trouble shooting.
