ford1715
I just recently purchased a 1997 Ford 1715 and have a couple of questions. I thought it had a live PTO, but it is not working if it does. How would I know for sure it came with that way or not.

Also, the past weekend the clutch was stuck engaged....I had to start it in gear and drive it around for a few minutes. After that it (came loose?) and worked perfectly the rest of the day..... Any advise?
Thanks Randy

i would have thought that unit had a 2 stage clutch.. if your driveline stage stuck.. perhaps the pto stage is stuck as well.

half way down should clutch drivetrain, all the way down on the clutch, pto

free play adjusted correctly?

run out of adjustment? indicating alot of wear on the clutch.. if so.. it may not be able to seperate the pto section..e tc.

post back with more details.

I had the same problem on our Fiat New Holland 50-86 a little while ago. Our tractor is fitted with independant PTO and transmission clutch controls, and despite regular use both siezed up over the course of about two weeks. Like yourself I could initially get the foot (transmission) clutch to work by driving around, but after a while even that seized solid...

Eventually I bit the bullet and split the tractor at the bell housing (which was a lot easier than I expected). I found that the clutch plates were in very good order and not badly worn as I had initially thought. However there had been a build up of dust (and even water) behind the bell housing, which meant the clutch travel had gradually got more and more limited until eventually they were not disengaging the clutch plates.

A good clean up and soaking of the clutch forks and bearings in diesel got everything working better than ever - although in hindsight I would recomment that if going to the trouble of splitting the tractor you may as well replace the bearings at the same time as I now suspect one of them may be on its way out!

Hope this helps

I have the same model 1715 and they only came with a single stage clutch so no live PTO.
The owners manual recommends that you place a pedal spacer between the clutch pedal arm and the step plate. This prevents the clutch disc from sticking to the flywheel and the pressure plate which happens when the tractor has been sitting for a period of time. Moisture forms on and between the surfaces causing a small amount of rust to form and causing everything to "stick" together, by keeping the assembly separated with the pedal spacer the surfaces may rust but are not stuck together.
I use a 1 1/2" spacer (2" X 4") and have not had any problems.
In the bottom of the bell housing there is a cotter pin that is called a "jiggle drain" check it periodically by jiggling it to make sore that is clear so water does not build up inside the housing.

Sounds like exactly what may have happened to my tractor as well. I will implement both of these fixes and see if they will help. Just wondering, there is mention in my paperwork about live PTO on at least some of these tractor sizes. On my clutch pedal there is another control rod going into another gear box looking thing behind the transmission about where the PTO gears should be, I think. This is a separate mechanical control from where the clutch shaft goes directly into the main clutch. I guess thats what made me think it did in fact have a live PTO. I would still be surprised if a tractor this new did not have it.....

Thanks to all for the input here. This is a new web site for me. but I think it is going to become one of my favorite ones very quickly....

Some of the other models that Ford/New Holland sold could be ordered with a two stage clutch but the model 1715 was introduced to compete with some of the lower priced Japanese compact tractors that had very few features. The 1715 was a stripped down model, fuel gauge and a tachometer with idiot lights. Minimal accessories were available (you can't even buy a toolbox).
What you got was a tractor that would do anything the more expensive would without the bells and whistles.
If you are sitting on the seat of your tractor and looking down on either side of the transmission you will see the same rod you mention on both sides, now push the brake pedal (this is part of the brake system).

that's sad... I was hoping the 15 series had more options. i know the 20 series sure did.

I've never owned a 15 series, but have owned 20 series machines.
