I recently removed the bucket from my loader to have some welding done to it. I noticed that one of the curl cylinders was working slower than the other. The joystick was worn out and needed replacing, so I assumed that it was causing the cylinder to work slower. I replaced the joystick today and the cylinder didn't want to work at all. I was able to manhandle the bucket back onto the loader to get some things done that had to be finished, but I assume that I am now operating at half-strength, correct? Any ideas as to what might the problem might be? Also, the joystick doesn't seem to want to "hop" back to a neutral position when I release it and the bucket tends to continue movement when I release the control. Thanks in advance for any assistance. I don't know that it matters, but the tractor is a JD 5400 with a JD 521 loader.

They work off the same hyd line and the cyl that has the least resistance will move first. This is normal & you do not need to worry. (as long as at the end of the moving cyl stroke, the other one begins to move) I had a 5400 with a 540? loader, I can't remember if there is any lubrication points in the loader controls, (cables etc.) but that sounds like what may be giving you the jaystick issues.

Remove the curl cable and manually push and pull the spool. If it returns to neutral. then the cable is binding. Either lube the cable of replace it.
