Tractor is a JD 1020, loader is a JD 37. I need to replace the 2 spool valve, and I want to get a 3 spool valve to facilitate a grapple function. My question relates to the max flow rates. The 1020 hydraulics flow at 10.5 GPM. I have yet to find a valve with a matching flow rate. How will a valve with a flow rate of 25 GPM work on my tractor? Also, how will a valve with less than 10 GPM work? That is to say, will the higher GPM valve allow too much flow at a time to be able to make small, slow movements of the boom or bucket? Will the lower GPM work too slow? What's a good compromise? Am I overthinking this? Thanks. Mark

I would not go with a significantly smaller rated valve, but 10.5 to 10 is not worth fussing over as I see it. I have a 13 GPM pump with a 3 spool rated at 25 GPM and it seems to be fine. It might not have quite the feathering of one better matched but I have plenty of feathering. No issues. Good luck

Be sure and purchase/install the closed center plug. Back when I was a JD service manager I disliked the hyd valves that were the convertible type(open to closed/vice-verse) because the plug was just another place to cause hyd problems when the seal on plug leaked.

Thanks for the replies and links. I understand what float is, but what is regen and what is it used for? J.J., can you explain the selector valve and how it would be operated and plumbed into the hydraulic system? I'm guessing it would be in conjuction with a 2 spool valve, plumbed into the bucket circuit, with a switch to divert hydraulics to the needed function. The boom would function normally, and when the grapple or thumb was needed, the bucket curl would be switched by the selector valve to operate the grapple/thumb. I would also guess that this would be a real nice place to have a joystick valve. Mark

Regen is used for fast bucket curl down.

The curl circuit would connect to the in ports of the selector valve, and the curl connects to one set of ports and the grapple circuit connects to the other set of ports.

A momentary switch would select the grapple when needed.

With no voltage applied, the curl circuit is active.

A joystick valve would be nice, but a two lever valve could be used.
