i've rented floor sanders, and ditch witches from a local company for 20+ years: but no longer: now they only rent to those with $500,000 liability insurance and a running account: i guess they are tired of messing with the occasional user.

Or perhaps they got sued by someone who injured themselves using some of their equipment, and this is the only way they can get insurance now?

That would be my guess as well someone was trying to 'save' money by DIY, and didnt know what they were doing.. Then sue because its the rental companys fault for renting them the item in the first place..
