New Holland TC40A
Tractors forward and reverse lever shows to be in neutral but tractor will not turn over. Have moved lever back and forth and got it to start but now that is not working.:confused2:

Sounds like either the f&r handle has went bad. If this is a cab That could be the problem

Sometimes it's not what it appears, check the seat safety switch directly under the seat, also make sure no one engaged the pto lever.

The seat safety switch will allow the tractor to turn over, but not start. The three things that cause most problems to keep the tractor from engaging the starter are the PTO switch, the neutral sensing circuit, and Fuse #2 blown. The PTO switch is easily seen from the rear of the tractor if you look beside the rear tire up on top of the rear transmission case. Getting someone to move the lever while you look really helps locate the switch. The neutral safety switch is screwed into the left side transmission case. Look under the operator platform just in front of the rear wheel for two wires going to the switch. You can remove the two wires and use an ohmeter to check the switch operation. With the transmission range in neutral, the switch should have continuity. With the the lever out of neutral, the ohmeter should read infinite resistance.

Most often if the PTO switch is malfuntioning and the tractor will not start, you will also see a PTO engage light on the instrument panel. The light on the instrument panel when the PTO is not engaged is also a sign that Fuse #2 may be blown. Remove the two screws holding the instrument panel in the dash and remove the panel. On the left side below the panel, the 2nd fuse from the left is #2. Pull that fuse and make sure it is not blown. This is the most common reason for starting malfunction on the TC40.

I wonder why we have to have so many switch interlocks to defeat prior to starting. My new cab model LS 7010 will start in gear if you just depress the clutch at least to the best of my knowledge it does. I havent used the PTO yet so dont know about that, but I know you dont have to be setting in the seat to keep it running either. That is so agravating with my Craftsman ZTR. Put in park, move the steering handle to outside position, make sure the PTO is disengaged, sit in the seat. Then if you dont take it out of park prior to moving the handles in, it dies, raise up to reposition your butt and it dies, try to lower the cutting deck with it mowing and it dies. The safety police have to protect us with so many safety interlocks, that you can barely operate some of these machines now days. I have no idea why lowering the deck while mowing causes it to die, what kind of safety is that for.

My full-sized New Holland LB75B TLB will start if the shuttle is in neutral. It doesn't have a seat switch and doesn't care if the transmission is in 1st thru 4th gear. Shuttle neutral is all that is required. Of course, it doesn't have a 540 PTO. The one irritation is the "beep! beep! beep!" whenever the shuttle is in reverse, but I think I can live with that. I absolutely love the torque converter input to the transmission and the electric clutches that work with the press of a button. It wouldn't do for tilling crops, but for digging, it is awesome.:D
