I built a log splitter for my old IH skid loader. I will be finishing up the metal work tomorrow. My question is can I go with a 4 way blade? My set up is as follows. 15.5 gpm, 1750 psi, 5 " cylinder, My blade is 1" by 10". I want to weld in some side pieces on the 1" blade to seperate the wood once it starts to split. I want to build a slip on 4 way blade. I was told my splitter would produce 17 tons of force. What do you think. Tom

What kind of wood would you be splitting primarily? I have a 34ton splitter which pretty much goes through knots and anything on stuff we have around here (maple and doug fir) It just has the single bit blade on it. I have thought about putting another blade to split 4 chunks at a time.

Yep you only have 17 ton. So I'd definatally not make it permanent. Make it a slip on if you can.

And I am not sure how yours is configured, but if the wedge is in the cylinder, make sure you only SINGLE bevel the 4-way wings on the top side. Otherwise you are also trying to "force" wood downward into the beam.

But if the wedge is on the ed of the beam, and you dont have a table off the end, it doesn't really matter.

The hardest wood I want to split wood be white oak, red oak and black oak. My blade is on the beam. I will have a tray. I was going to bevel the side blades on the top side of the blade so the pieces wound not jam against the beam. The side blades will be set back a few inches from the center blade so it doesn't have to split at all 4 blades at a time. I tested the center blade yesterday and it split the 18" round oak without any effort at all. I am going to build the 4 way blade and fill you in on the results. This thing might be pushing more than 17 tons because it bent the 3/8 steel that was holding the push block on to the beam. I might have a 5.5" cylinder because the outside diameter measures 6.25" Thanks for your replies. Tom
