Good evening all,

I'm designing another log splitter and have a hydraulic question for your folks that are much more knowledgable than I am...

I've used the calculator on Surplus Center but I must not be using the right PSI numbers.

I have a 4x24x2 cylinder and both a 6.5HP and 11HP engines. I'm wondering if i should buy an 11 gpm 2 stage pump or go with a 13. Speed is not as important as low end pressure is...I dont want to bog down when I'm in an oak crotch.

I've subscribed to and read responses by J_J and AKAman but just want to be sure that if i go with my 11 hp engine and the 13 gpm pump, i wont overwork the pump.

Let me know what your opinions are or where I can find some more info.

Thanks a bunch fellas

The 11 GPM pump only requires a min of 5 HP. If you use a larger pump, with the larger engine, you will have more volume and faster speed.

The 13 GPM pump only requires 6.5.

3.4 GPM HI press. stage
13 GPM LO press. stage

There are two 13 GPM pumps.

# First stage 13 GPM @ 650 PSI
# Second stage 3 GPM @ 2500 PSI

Horsepower = Pressure (PSI) x Flow (GPM)/ 1714

As you can see, 11hp is overkill, wasted money on both pumps.....
6.5 hp engine will get into trouble with a 13gpm pump if you increase pressure to 900psi...(below 850psi OK )....
It is good to have a 10% margin though, engines get tired too, after a few years....But you can definitely use the 6.5 hp engine on both pumps (11 and 13)....

Just use either engine. Overkill will not hurt anything. The relief on the valve will relieve if you get into some hard splitting. Everyone wants short splitting times.
