Logging Winches and How to Use \'Em

I tried to search for logging winch threads, but wasn't coming up with much although I've read a few in the past. Sorry if anyone is board with this subject.

I am a new memeber to this site...but have been reading for about a year. Probably be another until I can afford to plunk down the cash for me very own tractor. In the mean time I am doing as much research as possible, and this site has been great! Thanks all!

Now, I know there are a few logging winches out there that attach to the three-point-hitch on tractors. Any prefered one's out there? I know Farmi seems popular. Any others?

OK, so a logging winch can run off the pto, or hook up to a set of rear hydraulic remotes. I know of only one that does hook up to the hydraulic remotes and that is Industries Renaud Gravel @ Industries Renaud Gravel

I've hear this type can be smoother running than a winch that is PTO driven. Any input?

Now, once one has chosen a winch, what sort of tackle is required to hook up to and pull a log, and what are some safe ways of doing this? Also, any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

The Gravel winch is a real heavy-duty implement. How much logging do you intend to do? There seems to be mostly Farmi's being used around here...

Did you remember to change the Date Range field when you did your search? I just searched for <logging winch> and came up with all of the threads you are probably thinking of...

Here's a link to the most recent:

Also, you might want to check out the Forestry board, lots of relevant stuff over there:

Re: Logging Winches and How to Use \'Em

Hi mark,

I just purchased a Tajfun 40aV that runs off the PTO; they also make hydraulic models... much greater expense for equal pulling power (or course then you can use a remote!).

It makes cutting so much more enjoyable & easier on the tractor to use a winch instead of backing up with the box blade... It'll also pull small (6-10 inch) stumps out (cut 4-5 feet up for leverage) that are too big for the tractor to pull without spinning, or bushhog, loader, or box blade to dispatch.

I compared Farmi, Fransgaard & Tajfun.... Farmi & Fransgaard are very similar looking to one another, and have relatively few moving parts compared to the Tajfun... they also need to have tension released from the dogs/catches on the tractor side (backing up) when your load gets hung up on a stump or rock (Tajfun has a clutch & brake, so brake can be released without moving tractor).

Pricing was similar, but Tajfun was about 10% less for more steel (heavier), more cable, larger diameter cable, screen included.

It is very difficult to find information online (for me anyway) for the comparison, so I had to go & look at all & price all... had all features explained, & got an idea of the construction & build of the units.

Thats the biggest thing--what you like. I found the choice to be a pretty easy one.

For hauling logs I have 2 setups: 7 foot lengths of cable with 3/8 chain end & slider on them (too big for me--meant for skidders, but work on the winch cable hook)... also 6 foot lengths of 5/16 chain with hook on the end (slide up & tighten when pulled)...

Find a reasonably big Husqvarna (Stihl, Echo, etc.) dealer & ask them to tell you about what they have and have seen used.

I prefer the chains so far, but have done little cutting as it's been too darn wet & I am trying to set aside free time for boating, swimming, fishing with family this summer instead of trying for more seat time. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Re: Logging Winches and How to Use \'Em

Have a Tajfun 30 and after a year of hard logging from what I have seen and heard Tajfun is more bang for your buck and I prefer chain chokers.

Great info so far. Thanks a lot!

Now changing data fields for searching? What is meant by that?
