Long 2610
I recently bought a Long 2610 tractor that had been sitting for about three years. Changed all the fluids and replaced a couple of hoses. The biggest problem I have it that it blows black oil and gray smoke from the crankcase breather tube. I'm very concerned that I will have to go into the engine and would appreciate any advice on what may be causing this problem???? Live in Georgia near Atlanta so if you know of any good repair shops please let me hear about those too.

Stuck rings always a possibility in an engine that hasn't been used for a few years, but are you sure it is a problem? My mini-excavator blows smoke but it is normal for that particular engine. Most of the tractors on my brother-in-laws farm blow a lot of smoke from the breather - he only has 2 tractors newer than 10 years old and those 2 are the only that don't blow a lot of smoke out of the breather. Why not try running it on the type of work you plan for it and see how it works?

It is probably oil blow by. The rings could be stuck like harry said. The pistons, cylinders, and rings probably have a lot of wear, in that case it is time for a rebuild. That could be why someone quit running it.

The tractor is between a 1993 and 1996 and only shows 744 hours on it. I am concerned that the rings may have some how gotten stuck and oil is blowing by; there is oil dripping from the breather tube. The tractor hasn't been run very much since they got it going again; no field work has been done with it.

It starts right up within a few seconds and I can't detect any skipping when its running. My biggest concern is that I will damage it more by running it and cause myself a larger repair bill. I don't know very much about diesel engines. It is a 4 cylinder diesel made in Romania and built by Long Equipment.

I planned to bush hog about 20 acres and to use it to move some debris with the FEL. Do you think it would hurt it to run it for a while and keep a check on the oil level?
