Hey guys. Been reading for years. Usually can fix stuff no issue but my experience working on this old girl is limited.
I have a. 1976 long 445. My father purchased it around 1978. Aside from a main bearing knock occasionally (since 1978) it's run reliably since for the family. When we moved it came with and continues to serves us well. In 2009 he bought a little John Deere with can and heat to snowblow with, so the long got winters off.
My life was lit on fire and flushed down the toilet (nasty divorce) so home I came. I had no other options, and dad was dying. I put the long to work around here to earn money and pay bills, and she did well.
The power steering pump started to fade, so i tore it down to swap with one he had rebuilt back in the 80s. Turns out it was the wrong pump. Not knowing the machine I took too much apart, and got into the fuel system. To get the steering pump I pulled the starter. Tonpull the starter I pulled the fuel bowl. I've since figured out how to remove it without taking all of that off.
So I put the old pump back on, put it back together and wanted to put it off. I talked to the dealership that bought what's left of Long in north Caroline, he told me what was wrong, I had the pump for the 3-point.
Dads health declined and I had court, winter set in, so I pushed her into storage for winter.
Court happened, dad died, same week actually, and life went on. I've finished many of his projects...but I'm back on this project.
I actually called the guy he hired once I a while for help and he won't call me back, stopped by his house and he won't call me, so I'm on my own. I'll get it.
My problem now is air in the lines. I discovered last night it has a second fuel filter, so I got new filters today.
I discovered last night that fuel wasn't leaving the primary filter. Pulled the line and checked it, it's clear.
Replaced the lift pump today. Last week the intake on the lift pump stripped, i helicoiled it but couldn't get it to stop seeping. All new washers. The new pump is also seeping at the banjo. If I tighten it anymore, it will strip. Is the washer too thick and not crushinglike it should?
I have my primary filter drying with rtv on the bowl, probably overnight.
I have the service manual, I'm just looking for any advice as sometimes there is a trick.
I have work lined up for her along with all of my own work to be done. But.. Frankly i need her to run. I want her to run. I learned to drive on this almost 30 years ago. Seeing it sit makes me sick as I consider it to be a piece of my dad. Silly right?
Any and all help would be appreciated.
Join me this winter as I split it and do the clutch, or as I like to call it, crap.
Sorry for the long first post.
Apparently I can't type either
