Long 445
Hey guys. Been reading for years. Usually can fix stuff no issue but my experience working on this old girl is limited.

I have a. 1976 long 445. My father purchased it around 1978. Aside from a main bearing knock occasionally (since 1978) it's run reliably since for the family. When we moved it came with and continues to serves us well. In 2009 he bought a little John Deere with can and heat to snowblow with, so the long got winters off.

My life was lit on fire and flushed down the toilet (nasty divorce) so home I came. I had no other options, and dad was dying. I put the long to work around here to earn money and pay bills, and she did well.
The power steering pump started to fade, so i tore it down to swap with one he had rebuilt back in the 80s. Turns out it was the wrong pump. Not knowing the machine I took too much apart, and got into the fuel system. To get the steering pump I pulled the starter. Tonpull the starter I pulled the fuel bowl. I've since figured out how to remove it without taking all of that off.
So I put the old pump back on, put it back together and wanted to put it off. I talked to the dealership that bought what's left of Long in north Caroline, he told me what was wrong, I had the pump for the 3-point.
Dads health declined and I had court, winter set in, so I pushed her into storage for winter.
Court happened, dad died, same week actually, and life went on. I've finished many of his projects...but I'm back on this project.
I actually called the guy he hired once I a while for help and he won't call me back, stopped by his house and he won't call me, so I'm on my own. I'll get it.
My problem now is air in the lines. I discovered last night it has a second fuel filter, so I got new filters today.
I discovered last night that fuel wasn't leaving the primary filter. Pulled the line and checked it, it's clear.
Replaced the lift pump today. Last week the intake on the lift pump stripped, i helicoiled it but couldn't get it to stop seeping. All new washers. The new pump is also seeping at the banjo. If I tighten it anymore, it will strip. Is the washer too thick and not crushinglike it should?
I have my primary filter drying with rtv on the bowl, probably overnight.
I have the service manual, I'm just looking for any advice as sometimes there is a trick.

I have work lined up for her along with all of my own work to be done. But.. Frankly i need her to run. I want her to run. I learned to drive on this almost 30 years ago. Seeing it sit makes me sick as I consider it to be a piece of my dad. Silly right?

Any and all help would be appreciated.

Join me this winter as I split it and do the clutch, or as I like to call it, crap.

Sorry for the long first post.

Apparently I can't type either

Sorry for your troubles my friend.. been there done that.. believe me, it gets better.. like I told a fella at work just yesterday.. even a rainbow has an up & a down.. it seemed to make his day alittle better..
IF you machine has the 3 pc filter set-up.. filter head, filter & bottom bowl, all held togather by the long screw..
The oring goes UP IN the filter head, NOT ON the filter.. that's probably why the fuel isn't getting thru the primary.. double check it..
Those copper gaskets are SPECIFIC to the inj. pump.. they are "british" sized.. or "queens" threads as they're called.. The ones "over the counter" wont work very well.. The pump kit is a 7135-110 & has all the gaskets & seals needed to o/h the pump w/ alot left over for the other things..
IF you have a fuel shop nearby.. they'll have PLENTY of extras you can get for nothing.. just take your old one in & ask NICELY..
Hang in there.. TPG

Thanks man

Hmm, that's definitely a thing to check. The copper is definitely too thick. The nearest pump shop is a couple hours away. I haven't tossed anything yet. I may dress the old ones and reuse them, which I don't usually do. It also means that maybe my old lift pump is ok. I'll box it and hang on to it.

Good to know about the o-ring goes like you said, I'll give that a shot. The service manual is not the best, but it's slightly better than nothing.

I have the folks in tarboro working on tracking me down a pump. I ordered a pump, but it's the wrong one again, apparently they shipped them with a couple different pumps...
I've tried tracking down the other fittings to make hoses. Lol, no luck.

So.

I rtv'd the bottom of the fuel bowl on the first filter and let t dry overnight. I installed the new filter and gasket like you mentioned.
I then swapped lift pump gaskets out with the old ones, still leaked. I dressed them with Emory cloth, still leaked. Got my sheet gasket out, hole punch set out and made gaskets to go with the cooper. Success.
Started priming, secondary filter leaked. Reset it the way you specified. It sealed up.
Then I followed the bleeding procedure.
Finally cracking the return line for the injectors, with the charger assisting the starter, she started.

I don't know what to say. Hearing it start and run once more is beyond description.

On to a full service, oil, filter etc. then to touch up some paint, finishing installing led back up lights and then off to work. I have to get a power steering pump sorted so that's next, as it helps.

Thanks Man, I just needed a little help. I should have joined sooner.
