I may be purchasing a tractor out of state... Wondering who is a good recommend. Tractor will come out of northern Alabama and come up to the Portland, Oregon area.

Also, any advice in dealing with shippers (Insurance, guarantees)?

I looked at the uship page and it seems interesting enough....

Several years ago, I bought my CC from a JD dealer in northeast Alabama and had it shipped to New Hampshire. The dealer called several trucking companies that they used regularly and provided me with a quote. The process was painless and the selling dealer did all the work. I could have looked for a cheaper haul, but I chose to go with theirs.

It ended up costing me about a grand to ship it. The freight hauler just loaded it into a regular box trailer and hauled it north. It was insured by the shipper and all I needed to do was provide a loading dock for unloading.

We just shipped a loader as a partial (1/4 truck) to Utah very reasonably. The company we used was a brokerage in the Pac. NW. This was the first time we tried them and they were A. CHEAP and B. picked it up the day we called them. It won't always work like that, but it was encouraging. PM me if you like and I'll get you the info.

Not sure on the tractor size/weight you are looking at. If its small enough to fit in a dry van thats even better. I'd look up local freight brokers in your area and see what you can find out. If it small enough to where a trucker can do it on a partial you can get it hauled pretty cheap. Might even look for some mom and pop trucking companies in your are that haul freight to the east and get it hauled back on a backhaul rate. Partials are a good money maker for the trucker and saves the customer $$ to boot. I used to haul partials quite abit from the east coast coming back west quite abit. Also try Landstar, Hotshot express. Most importantly, haggle with the broker or company you are looking into- backhauls pay fuel expense to get the truck back for front haul to make the $
Go to a truck stop and pick up some the small driver books where companies advertise for drivers, that will give a host companies to contact for prices. Ask about the cargo insurance policy of the carrier you go with. They are required to carry it by USDOT as a for hire carrier.
