Have a general diesel question, what are the long-term effects of incorrect timing? I've got a JD compact w/ a 2 cylinder Yanmar diesel and just replaced the injector pump. Since that repair the engine seems to be smoking a bit more, but otherwise runs/sounds fine. Suspect the timing is off, and am taking it to the dealer this week to have everything checked/corrected.

Just out of curiosity, if it is incorrect timing that's the smoking culprit...what are the long-term effects if this is not corrected?

Thanks,
Bryan

If it is running smoothly at an idle after its warm you are real close. A little bit of black smoke is ok. If you are too far retarded then power and fuel economy will suffer. Too far advanced and excessive pressure on wrist pins, pistons, rods, bearings and will cause problems down the road. I /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
