Hello to all,
This may get a little long, please accept my apology in advance. I need to bounce this off y'all. My wife and I built our house on 3 acres a year or so ago. We are on a big lake and having small children I didn't want to dig a pond for the dirt I needed to build my property up. So, I paid for dirt to be brought in. All in all I've had well over a 150 loads of fill brought in.
I'm not in real bad shape as far as holding water, I have a couple of low spots but nothing that I can't take care of. But the ground isn't really as smooth as I'd like.
I would like to take the feather out a little further out. I'm not real excited about buying more dirt, so what I'm thinking is this. If I disc most of my property could I move that material up closer to the house and take that "feather" a little further out. My thinking on this is that I would kind of being killing two birds with one stone. I would be smoothing out a lot of the rough spots and making a more gentle slope from the house and shop.
I'm not real sure what you end up with when you disc. Is that material sitting loose on top and can it be moved via loader and box blade? If I go this route I'm planning on cutting in some swell ditches after the disc'd material is moved up towards the house and feathered out.
I'm just not real sure what sort of material I'd have to work with once I disc it. I think it could work if that material is fairly loose and able to be moved.

Sorry again about the length of this thing, I don't think I painted a very good picture. Any help on what sort of material I'd have to work with after discing would be helpful.

Thanks,

It will depend on what kind of soil you have, what the moisture content of that soil is at the time of discing, and how deep you disc it (which might depend on how heavy your disc is, and what angle it's set for.

Personally I think you are looking at the king cutter tiller from tsc. It will break up the old surface earth, and beat lumps out of truckload dirt assuming it was not brought in shredded. It will not break up tree stumps, roots, or rocks. It will loosen as much as needed, than box blade or fel load. I am not a professional farmer, but disks are used to break up lumps at the surface, such as after plowing. With a lot of weight on the disk it might break a little of hard compacted surface, but I do not believe it would be enough for terraforming. If your soil is extremely loose you might be able to do it. IF the earth is too hard for the tiller ,break it up with the teeth on fel loader, only the first couple inches, enough to get the tiller to bite.:D

I'll agree with Sparty... Unless you're pulling an ag-sized disc, you won't break up enough soil to be worth your while moving it around. A disc will easily break up a few inches over a couple of passes (great for creating a seed bed), but that's not enough to move around. I doubt you'll want to disc for an entire week to get to a reasonable depth!

A tiller will get down 6-8" in one pass, which you can move around. You might want a second or third pass depending on how much you want to reform. But it seems the tiller would be a better option. Once tilled, a box blade is probably the best bet to smooth out everything.

Enjoy and good luck!

Thanks for the replies. I've talked to a few people around here. Our soil isn't really all that hard. It sounds like discing for the reason I'm talking about is pretty common around here.
Thanks again, I'll let y'all know how it goes.

You may find that a 10 foot wide chain drag is a better tool for your application.

Link just shows the tool and gives an idea on price. Around here, stuff like this is on sale 15% off to get rid of the inventory.
