Hi - I apologize if this is in the wrong place.

I'm looking at a used JD755 with a belly mower on it. I drove it and it seems to operate fine. Two things concern me.
First, the current owner says it has 755 hours on it. The hour meter says 45. He had replaced the tach because it didn't work and it turned out to be the tach wire. So now it has 755+ who knows how many hours on it, right? would the hour meter stop if the tach did?

The other thing is I drove it and cut some grass. It seemed to bogg down through the somewhat thick clover and weed mix I was cutting. It wasn't too thick or too tall. It resembled much of my lawn. But it seemed like the tractor wasn't quite powerful enough to drive the belly mower.

Should it be able to run the belly mower without getting slowed down. Once or twice I almost stalled it.
Is that normal for these Tractors? It looks like everyone has good things to say about them.

I'm new to all this. we moved last year to a place with a lot more acreage and it's more than my little L118 could cut.

I just can't afford to make a bad choice.

Thanks,
Bill

My tach has the hour meter built into it and runs off the tach, so replacing the tachometer replaces the hour meter too.

I'd wager you had the HST pedal floored with your foot. With a tractor's HST, flooring the pedal, in effect, runs it in high gear, so more speed, less torque. Apparently, this is pretty common mistake by novice HST operators.

Should it be able to run the belly mower without getting slowed down. Once or twice I almost stalled it.

Same answer as above...if you had lifted your foot a bit, you'd likely see the tractor cutting better and still moving at a reasonable speed.

We were all "new to this" at one time.

The 755 is a pretty nice tractor. It will do quite well for a 2-3 acre property.

I traded a 755 off last spring and miss it everyday. I plan to buy another someday. I believe if the tach quits so does the hour meter. I was curious if the tractor was in high range it wont take mowing with the hydro pedal pushed all the way down. Normal mowing with mine in low range I could push the pedal all the way down and it would take it and do a nice job of mowing. You might drive it again and see if it was in high range. If you don't feel comfortable about it find another 755. They were great tractors and 755 hours is nothing for them. Mine had 3500 on it last year when I traded it off.
