I currently have 10 acres of land. About 7 of those acres are heavily wooded and not applicable to this post. :) The other 3 acres are where my house is being built and where I have "grass" or at least something growing. My land at the road is about 270 feet wide and something like 1600 feet to the back of the property. Starting at the road I have about 260 ft by 50-75 feet to mow. Its pretty rough due to the "clump grass" growing there. Dirt has eroded around the clumps. Very rough. At the 50-75 foot mark we have cut a swale to direct water, and then my land starts to head downhill. This section, down to our build site is pretty barren due to trying to lessen the slope to slow the water down when it rains. Below this past where the house is built, thigs get flat again and its pretty smooth down there. Mostly because alot of the soil from up above has come to rest in this area.

Top: I have tried to mow this with my Kubota L3130 and old brush hog, but I keep breaking shear pins. I believe its due to a couple of issues. 1) its rough as can be and shakes me, the tractor and mower to death when keeping up my speed to maintain RPMs for the mower. 2) I try to go slower to keep the shaking down, and the mower doesn't like running at those low RPMs. At some point I am going to get my box blade in this area and loosen it up and then smooth it back out. For now, I need to keep the tall grass down. Hence my need for a garden tractor. If I can drive slow enough, much shorter wheel base, I think I can maintain this area fairly reasonably. I will need it anyway later when the house is finished and I mowing the "yard"around the house, whatever that ends up being.

Middle: Don't need to mow, no grass or anything. :D

Bottom: I can mow this with the tractor fine. I can maintain the RPMs and no shear pin issues.

After visiting the JD dealer today and getting brochures and prices, I am leaning towards the X310. Reviews here and elsewhere look good. I'd rather go tractor than Z-turn so we can pull a small cart later on and a few other small things. Is there anything else (brands, models) I should look at. I will go back and test out the X310 and maybe others when its not a rainy day.

A 310 and higher model number should work for you. I would recommend you fix the lawn and plant grass as soon as you can, a smooth lawn area will look better and be easier to maintain.

I gave my wife the brochures and she suggested I get a 500 series. :D

I have decided to not do anything for the time being. I think anything I get will just be destroyed until I do a bit more work. So, I am going to replace the shear pin and try to get the tall stuff knocked down, then start in with the box blade. Just can't see dropping a few grand until I create better working conditions.

I have been looking at the X3xx series Deeres a little, contemplating a step up from a smaller machine. My land is quite a bit like yours, with about 3.3 acres mowable, some rough stuff, and the X300's seem pretty capable. I've seen a lot of comments that the X320 is the better choice to start with in that lineup, due to a heavier duty and more serviceable transmission...but I'm sure the guys in the know will chime in on that a little better than I can.

Stay away with any model that has the K-46 trans

I started with an X320 and I have two acres. It works well but it is a little on the slow side.

Actually the X310 has the same tranny as the X320. The 310 has a 42" deck and the 320 a 48" deck. The 320 also has a bigger engine, but I don't think it has the power steering and deck lift like the 310 does.

I think fixing the problem first is a smart move, and the next few weeks would be the best time to plant new grass in your area. I think it is cheaper to fix the problems first once and for all and doing so will speed up your mowing considerably. If you are getting some rain now and over the next month you should get good germination of the grass seed and the weeds will be past their germination cycle too. August 15th to Labor Day is what I would shoot for.

About the mowers, while the x500 series are also good I would rather put the difference in the lawn preparation and maybe go with a larger x300 series with a big deck. Reasoning that you already have a 3130 for larger jobs.

We are getting a bit of rain, but its abnormal for Texas. I don't put much faith into this continuing through August. It's be nice, but I am not getting my hopes up.
