Looking at JD 790

I am about to buy a property that has a 12+ acre sloping front yard. I'm interested in getting a tow-behind gang mower (12-foot wide cut) to mow it. The mower weighs about 500 pounds and doesn't require any power supply. I'm looking at getting a John Deere 790 to pull it. I also want to get a front blade to plow the long driveway. Anyway, is a 790/gang mower combination a good match for this situation? By the way, this would be my first tractor.

I can't give you any help on the JD 790, but I can on the gang mower. Unless you love to cut grass, don't do it! I had a TORO unit that would do 8 ft. at a time, it would cut great. But you had to cut about every 3rd. day! They will not cut anymore than 1 1/2" of grass! so any long grass just gets bent over and springs back up and can't be cut. In the spring I was cutting every other day! I only have 5 ac. of yard so I can't even think of doing 12ac. every other day! If you had an 84" finish mower you won't have to cut it as often as with a gang mower. Unless you want to!

Check out some of the new mowers from JD. Woods makes some batwings that may also foot the bill. You can mow close. I cut about 8 acres with my Woods 80" mower every other week. Its a Woods "brush hog " type that also shreds all my tree trimmings. Woods also has a 92" finish mower that looks very nice. My neighbor just purchased a JD 790. All manual, not even shuttle shift. Had he talked to me first he would probably at least get a shuttle shift or in JD jargon, a power reverser set up. His regret is that he did not get top and tilt installed and financed through the dealer. Rat...

woodsonline.com is Woods internet site. I'm sure Brush Hog, Landpride etc make some nice mowers as well.
