I need to know how many hours I can expect out of a 850C series 2 dozer. This machine I'm looking to buy has 6500 hrs, with vail rippers. My uncle owns it and treats everything he owns with great care. He has 4 of these dozers for oilfield rig pads and road building to running a crusher. He says the motor should last till 10,000-12,000 hrs. Is this true?

Sounds accurate to me. If you trust your uncle, you should buy it.

Those are very good dozers. Put a lot of hours on one at my previous employer. If maintained properly 10000 hours is easily obtainable.

From everything I've read here on TBN over the last 13 years, the motor lasting a long time is the last concern when looking at used dozers. Everyone with personal experience says to check out the tracks, suspension, rollers, etc.... as those are the first things to wear out. Do a little more research and ask your uncle how long those types of things last and what condition those types of thing are in now. Everyone says replacing those items can add up to more than the purchase price quickly. With that said, I have no personal experience with dozers, I just read a lot. Good luck with your adventure and welcome to TBN!

I guess they refer to it as the undercarriage. That seems to be the term. Dirt and rocks get in there due to, well, its a dozer! hahaha and that can cause wear and tear.

You may want to post some questions in the Owner/Operating forum. It might get more universal dozer advice VS just JD dozer advice. ;)

Check that the rear drive sprockets have blunt, beefy teeth, not thin and pointed. You want to get on the ground and look up at the bottom of the chain. (only place you can see it.) The rollers should be round, not flattened out. You probably want an 1" or so of grouser height. Make sure the cutting edge was not worn so much that the blade itself got worn into. Finally, Id make sure that the engine sounds good and the hydro transmission is responsive. These items can be $ that quickly gets spent. Anything steel on steel has a faster wear rate, but dozers really can not be beat for leveling projects.
