We're looking for a tractor to run an 8' snowblower, 16' New Holland 116 mower and move hay with. We may run it on our old Hesston 6x6 round baler. My requirements are 100+ PTO horsepower, 540 PTO, 4wd, cab and a loader for under $35,000. Age isn't a concern, older might be better in the sense that there are fewer electronic controls. I've found four that I'm interested in, wondering if y'all had any opinions. In no particular order:

1982 JD 4240. 7,700 hours. Powershift, and PFWD. Looks good, selling dealer sold the tractor and loader new. The loader was just installed in 2000. Unfortunately I've heard lots of bad things about the PFWD system compared to MFWD. Asking $30k.

Case IH 5140. Hours unknown but I would estimate 6-7,000. Has a Great Bend loader with third function, no other information. I've ready that the hydraulics can be slow on these and I need to contact the seller for details but wanted to see if it was a worthwhile machine first. $26,000

Ford 8340SLE. 6,600 hours, no loader. It has a 16X16 transmission with a creeper that could be excellent for blowing snow. It's the closest to me, but I would have to add a loader which could cost around $10k. $24,000

2004 New Holland TS115A. 5,900 hours, 24 speed transmission and left hand shuttle. 540 or 1,000 PTO, aftermarket loader with SSQA and new bucket. This is the farthest away but transport should be under $1,000. $33,000.

Any opinions would be appreciated.

I had a '79 4230C 2 wd. Very reliable tractor. I don't know if the later model upped the hp or not (your 4240 you mentioned). I can't imagine what that tractor could do with 4wd. That would be my choice having had one. That 400 cu in 6 with a 4" straight chrome pipe is awesome. I used to run mine in parades after I got it all cleaned up with flags all over it. Engine turned the heads with the straight pipe. Course even the Sound Guard cab had a hard time keeping the noise out and I usually wore ear plugs.

I know what MFWD means but don't know what the PFWD means. I had in range power shift which I really liked and worked great. It was "in range power shift" meaning I could shift between 2 gears in a single range.....aka when you hit the end of a row, you could drop down a notch...shift lever movement only, no clutch, make your turn and with a flip if the shifter, be back in your plowing gear. That was really swell, especially when cultivating at a good clip.

I didn't have a loader but I did have a complete cosmetic work over, with new rubber all around including F1, 18.4-38 rears, new 134A ac system, cab interior all redone, professional paint job/decals. Hours were 3900 and something. All the suspension and operating functions were still tight. That was in 2005 and I bought it for $17k. I sold it because I retired and quit leasing land. Got the 6530 for my "big" tractor. I had bought a loader for a 4020 years earlier from an after market place up North, name started with a K as I recall. Great loader and was only about 5k new if that helps you understand what the one you are looking at is worth. I bought a JD 152 I think was the number with an 8' bucket for my 4010 (70 hp about the same chassis and 6 cyl engine type as the 4230) used at $3500 many years ago.
