This may be a little off topic here, but maybe some of the collective wisdom can be of help answering my questions.

I have a NH LS170 skid steer that I use around the house, in my business and for brush clearing and demolition projects that occur from time to time. During and extended construction project up in Vermont this spring it became apparent to me that this machine is somewhat undersized for my needs. So I undertook to find a larger machine that would work better for me. Some of the parameters that I was looking for was a lift capacity of 2500 lbs or more, an operating weight of 8000 lbs or less (so I could carry it without having to have a commercial license and DOT authority). I wanted an enclosed cab with AC and heat. I have been a satisfied New Holland customer for many years now so my preference would be a NH machine. I finally decided on a NH L185.b. I asked my dealer, with whom I have a very good relationship, to start searching for a used machine for that was 6 years old or less and that had less than 1500 hours on it. Yesterday I stopped in to see how the search was going. He said that he hadn't found a L185 but another good customer (a farmer) had just traded in a L190, would I be interested in looking at that?

So, I brought home the L190 that my dealer wanted me to look at so I could play with it this weekend. It appears to be an early 2007 L190 with a 81 HP (gross) 4 cylinder normally aspirated engine and a flat glass door. According to a mechanic at the dealership, there was a model change in that year where they went to a curved glass door, updated cab and who knows what other changes. Does anybody know how to tell when the machine was manufactured by looking at the serial number? It does not have an owners manual with it and I can't seem to find the specs. I am not even sure what engine it has in it. Does anybody know where the tag for the engine would be located? This machine seems to be very well kept with fairly low hours (1079 hrs) for it's age.

The machine seems to start good and runs well until you advance the throttle to nearly full power. Then it sputters and cuts out (still runs, but rough). If you back off of the throttle, it smooths out. The sputtering started when I picked up a full bucket of dirt. Thought maybe that the fuel gauge was bad and that it was trying to run out of diesel. Gauge shows full and when I tried to add fuel from a 5 gal can, it only took about a gallon. So gauge is ok, Skid is full of fuel. Now I am thinking maybe a dirty fuel filter or an injector problem. I can't see any unusual smoke while operating. . Anybody got any other ideas what might be causing this?

The machine might be a keeper if the dealer can sort out this and a few other minor problems. He hasn't given me a price so that will certainly affect my decision too.

Thanks,

Tim

Why do you think you'd need a CDL for anything over 8000lbs?

F-350 SRW - 8500lbs
14K Equip Trailer - 4500lbs

That's only 13K, so you are 13,001 away from CDL territory, unless NH has different restrictions.

Classes of License:

The Federal standard requires States to issue a CDL to drivers according to the following license classifications:

Class A -- Any combination of vehicles with a GCWR of 26,001 or more pounds provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.

Class B -- Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds GVWR.

Class C -- Any single vehicle, or combination of vehicles, that does not meet the definition of Class A or Class B, but is either designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver, or is transporting material that has been designated as hazardous under 49 U.S.C. 5103 and is required to be placarded under subpart F of 49 CFR Part 172 or is transporting any quantity of a material listed as a select agent or toxin in 42 CFR Part 73.

Todd,

I have a 3500 Dodge with a GVW of 11,500 and a trailer with GVW of 14,000 (empty wt about 3,500). The new (to me) skid loader weighs less than 8000 but there are other things that have to be hauled on the trailer along with the loader. Yesterday I had the the truck and trailer loaded as if I was going to a job (with my LS170). The GCVW was just over 21,320. Took the LS 170 to the NH dealer and picked up the L190 (still with the trailer loaded as if going to to a job) and re-weighed. New GCVW was 22,500 a weighed on a CAT scale. The upshot is that I will still have room to load a little extra stuff if I need to. That is the way I like it. I take this rig all over the nation doing my day job. The last project was 1900 miles away in Vermont. Last year I had a project that was in North eastern Utah about 1200 miles away.

Tim

Edit to prior post: when the loader engine is sputtering, it is blowing serious white smoke

Sounds like you have it figured out. That L190 with bucket is right about 7900lbs.

Well I pulled the trigger on the L190 Skid steer. Dealer says he will have all the issues cleared up and it will be ready for me to pick up Thursday:) I asked him about a warranty, and he threw in a 90 day power train warranty. I also picked up a 36" auger and a 6' extension (already had the auger drive). Now if I can just find an aftermarket cup holder for it!

I just returned home from the dealer and a guy called asking me if I still do brush work? I had advertised on CL for doing tractor mowing and brush work. I told him "you bet" I can be there Friday

If your truck GVWR is 11,500 and the trailer is 14,000 your CGWR is 25,500. That is under CDL. You can load it however you want it will still be under CDL.
