I'm looking for a quality push type ferilizer spreader--and it's not easy. The popular big box models seem to get poor ratings. I already have a 500 lb 3PT hitch tractor mounted model so this hand spreader is just for narrow areas or places around the house where i don't want a 20 ft swath of fertilizer.

My first choice was the a popular edge guard model but the really negative reviews scared me away. I looked at some others but it's a confusing mass of names and spreaders and I don't know what to believe.

Do you have a good push type spreader that does a good job and has proven reliable? It could hold 50 lbs or 150 lbs--it desn't matter, I'm just looking for one that has some quality with it and is likely to last. I take good care of my stuff and clean and oil after each use.

Thanks in advance and any advice appreciated.

I have a smaller Scotts, don't know the model, that works fine. There's a simple lever, the harder you squeeze it the more comes out. The problem is that if your not careful you could squeeze the handle while spreading and flow too much. I've only used grass seed in it so heavier materials could be a problem. Also in this day and age they could have redesigned it with more plastic and easier for people to break.

If I was going to buy something larger but still a push style I think Home Depot had some nice looking spreaders from Agri-fab and Meyer. They also had a Deere brand but I didn't like that one as much as it had the same plastic wheels like the cheaper Scotts.

I've got an Earth Way towable from Agri Supply, does a pretty good job and has held up well over the past four years. They also make push types and I like the fact that for most of the stuff they sell, ASC also carries parts, in case something does break.

How much does your Earthway towable hold and do you remember what it cost?

I had a good comercial type scotts seeder/spreader, used it for about 12 years, it had pneumatc tires and was very stable even on the worst of terran, Due to having used it to spread fertilizer over the years the frame become rusted from the sodium, as well as the wheels and bearings rusting, I haven't used it in a couple years, the bucket, gate and gears were all still good, My plans were to rebuild it because as you have stated the goods ones are hard to find but I clean up around the shop and wound up scraping the spreader, Besides fertilizer has become expensive around here so I stopped buying it,

You'll Likely find the better ones from the farm supply stores,

I have a Scott's. Lousy thing. When it gets low, holding maybe half a cubic foot, the fertilizer doesn't feed, so I have to rock it back & forth to get it to continue to feed. When it's almost empty, it won't feed anything. If you look at it you will see it is not funnel shaped enough at the bottom, which is the problem. Stupid design.

BTW, mine has no rust. After each use, I wash it off with the hose and hang it in the barn to dry.

I like earthway. My only word of advise it get a lever action NOT cable operated. I have/had a cable operated and it became corroded and useless. It's primary use was to distribute salt y error was not thoroughly cleaning it and greasing it up. Either way with a lever this would if given me many extra years of use.

Second, get one with rubber wheels (pneumatic) not plastic. These two features alone will make life better for you.
