My wife and I recently cleared the way for a new driveway on our 40 acre lot in Uxbridge, Ontario. We now have quite a few Scots pine piled at the top of the property and since we will not be building for at least another year or so was just wondering what everyones thoughts would be as to what to do with these cut trees. I was going to start cutting/chipping the pile down this summer but was wnodering if anyone knows of someone who may be interested in just picking the pile up and making use of it for something. Not sure if the scots make good firewood or not...if not I have no idea what i can do with this pile...looking forward to some input...

Thanks in advance....:)

I'm not too far from you and could come by and take a look @ what you have. How many, how long are they, how big round, de-limbed?

frwinks, hard to say as the trees were actually removed by the road builder...judging from the pile it would have to be at least 20 to 25 trees...some as long as 40'...unfortunately nothing is delimbed.

nice length.. have you tried any of the local loggers? the fact that they're not delimed might be an issue for them, but you never know... a lot of the wood from around here goes to the mill in Keswick, they all pass by your neck of the woods anyways. If all fails, cut it up for firewood;)

My suspicion is the road builder left them like that for a reason. After it is felled, pine gets 'blue' in three or four days and the lumber value drops substantially. Pine is not very good as a firewood (burns hot but fast -- low btus)and there is not as big a demand for softwood pulp these days. So -- you probably have the makings of a really good bonfire:rolleyes:. You could probably use them to build a "rustic" shed.

Welcome neighbour. I'm only about 20 minutes from you.

Someone recently built across the road from us and had a pile of Scots pine just like you do. They were mostly twisty though as Scots pine is. They eventually found someone who took them for free for pulp but it took them a lot of hunting around and they had at least a few hundred trees. It may not be worth it for a pro to come and take 40 Scots pine.

Are you sure they are Scots? The reason I ask is that usually Scots pine are far from straight and not often will the small end be big enough to saw. If they are red pine or something you have a much more appealing wood on your hands.

More than likely firewood or a giant wood chipper is the way to go. If you put a sign out "free wood" you may get lucky and save yourself some work but don't let anyone on the lot by themself for fear of dumping etc.
