Start looking on craigslist in your area, you can come across a nice used one very reasonable. Are you wanting one that has hydraulic lift on the bar or just go with the mechanical lift?

Has anyone used the DR Tow-Behind 7.25 All-Terrain Trimmer/Mower instead of sickle mower? DR claims a 4ft offset to mow close to pond edges, banks, etc not sure how safe that is. Also saying no more than 20 degree slope.

I'm seeking recommendations for a sickle bar mower I can use with my subcompact tractor. I'm involved in an ongoing - probably endless - battle against an invasive exotic weed (Phragmites) growing along the edges of ponds on my property.

Why not buy some 2-4D foliar herbicide, the type that kills broadleaf weeds but does not effect grass, then spot spray the Phragmites once every two weeks until it is eradicated? Unlikely you would need more than three applications, spaced two weeks apart. 2-4D is normally mixed about two ounces of concentrate per gallon of water. You might have to spray a few survivors, or new plants germinated from seeds, the following Spring.

Spot spraying is the $40 solution.
