As the title says looking for a small preferably dump style utility trailer can be manual or hydraulic. Ideally something like the Maxi products MDT58-3-Sa (but that is probably out of my price class. This one is a 5' x 8' with a GVWR of 2999 and a payload of 17xx lbs and or 2.2 cu yds. Something I can go get top soil, mulch behind a vehicle and then pull it around the yard with my tractor and distribute the material. Thinking of trading my Toyota Tacoma for a SUV that will tow better and thus I would lose the pick up bed. Any ideas on small trailers like this would be appreciated. Thanks Jack

1,700# is a waste of a trip. I used to put more than than in the bed of my Ford Ranger and it was not over the sides. Wait till you get a bigger truck if that is what you are doing and get a 10,000# dump trailer minimum. It will have a good 7,500# payload. It will still be easy to overload. Soil, sand, gravel, ect gets wet when buying in bulk and will weigh way more.

To give you a example, I drove dump truck all last week. Did 11 trips in one day and probably 25 total. Its just a 78 Chevy with a 350. Its got a 6 yard bed and I only loaded it about 3 to maybe 3 1/2 feet deep. Remember this bed is only 6' wide and 8' long. I never left the scales under 6.2 tons. That 12,400#. Most times I was 6.4 to 6.8 tons.

In a 5x8 like you want you are talking maybe a foot of material max.

By the way that truck is a pig but fun to drive. 1978 C60, 350 2 barrel with a 4 speed and a high low rear end. No air brakes. Max speed is about 44mph. Same guy has a 1976 Ford F700 with a 391 and a Holley 4 barrel backed up with a 5 speed and a high low rear end. It has air brakes. It will do about 55 but has much more low end grunt but no power steering. The Chevy is a better truck mechanically.

A small trailer can be very useful to haul mulch (the mulch I buy is light), ATV, lawn mower, small amounts of dirt, etc. I have a 6' x 10' trailer that i have had for 20 years and its perfect to get a load of mulch and maneuver around the yard to unload. As Chris said a single axle trailer can be easily overloaded so do your home work before you buy. I have an 18' dual axle trailer but only use it when needed.

I was looking at a Bri-Mar recently, no idea of cost as none was posted. 3k rated single axle trailer, weighs in right about 1k. They also make a 5k trailer that weighs slightly more. I've thought of picking one of them up for exactly the purpose the OP described. If i need more capacity, I hook up the larger 10k dumper to the pickup. Why a smaller trailer? Sometimes that larger trailer is just too big to maneuver where I might need to get it.

Thanks for all the comments. Diamondpilot I understand your comment but a small trailer is more to my overall needs. Yes a bigger one would allow fewer trips but it would be harder to move around my yard. Still in the looking mode.
For those with a manual dump, how hard is it to dump. My wife is convincing me that I should pay more attention to not abusing my back (68 with three discs missing in the lower spine, pulling g's for many years and sports were fun but now I'm paying) so I am leaning towards and assisted dump. Of course the cost goes up.

My uncle has the same issues with his back. All those years working as a mechanic lifting engines and trannys with his bare hands.

Anyway he tells me ____________(insert work aid like power lift) is a lot cheaper than another operation.

Take your wifes advise.
