Looking to buy some seed, will this work?

Years ago I bought a mixed seed packet from the state called a " Wildlife Packet " well it is no longer offered. It was a combination of Black Oil Sunflower seeds, Millet, some Corn and Buckwheat. Now I would like to plant a couple of acres again with some sort of wildlife packet. The sunflowers were really great as the Gold Finches and Bluebirds just loved them. So here is my question,,, if I would buy a sack of sunflowers that is used for bird feeders would it grow if I broadcasted it in the spring on a tilled and prepared field. If not, do any of you know where I can buy Black Oil Sunflower seed to broadcast? Or better yet, one of the prepared packets like the one the state used to sell. Any and all information or advise is greatly appreciated. Thank you. RRM

Where are you?? Someone from your area likely has some info on suppliers.

I have broadcasted black sunflower packaged as "bird food" and it came up fine, I did put out fertilizer as well. I cant compare it to a certified "seed", since i was just seeing what would happen. ( deer ate it before it got 12"

There are "wildlife blends" available from many seed producers.

On the slopes and old cells at the landfill we used wildlife mix 27 bucks per pound. Then we started using wild bordered mix 10 bucks for 50 lbs. It's got Milo, millet,shotgun,sunflower and we also mix in seed oats to. Makes a nice bird mix. Just fertilize the shot out of it. Plus crimp it in some way for faster germination.

Think this is the same as the bird seed mix at the co-op. They mean for you to feed it to the birds, but if you plant it, it is a field of sun flowers, millet, etc. Guys here at work plant it for game birds, if you buy the different seeds by the pound I believe it will run you 4x as much as the mixed seed ready to go. Wal-mart may carry it as bird seed also, but I know co-op has it as bird seed for a good price.
