loose grease fittings, shame on me!

My machine is over 40yo. Still the original zerks. 2X a summer, I check the grease. Nothing loose like a goose either.

Now, on a trailer jack, errr, the thin steel tube will not retain them for a single summer. It's tempting to weld on a curved plate to that tube and have a zerk on the thicker steel.

Your post was humorous shooterdon - at first. Now it's just sad, really sad - but oh so true.

I've never had a loose zerk but I have one that will only accept grease if I rotate the upper lid on my grapple.

update on loose grease fittings....aka zeros.....aka zerks......

i couldn't borrow a tap so back to Harbor Freight.

I was able to chase the threads on the fitting but for some reason, there was orange paint on the threads on the tractor side?

i was able to get the metric 10-1 tap to start but because of its location, couldn't use the handle so i used a pliers.

That first bit of resistance when chasing threads to me is always scary. Always worried about crossthreading.

Alls well that ends well.

FWIW......I went online to search taps etc. There was the Harbor Freight for about $40 and another similar looking set from some other company.......$900.00

I bet the $900 set is better.

The first time I went to grease the tail wheels on a new Darrell Harp rotary cutter, the zerks came out. One came out when I pushed the grease coupler on. They were a push-in style. The holes got tapped and no more problems.

Same issue I had with a Bush Hog brand tail wheel. Very thin metal and a very short zerk.
