I somehow managed to lose the key fob to my wife's Mazda3 from my fanny pack.
Ordered a new one from Amazon for $37. It looks just like both the fob to the MX-5 and the 3. The 3 does not employ a real key when its fob battery goes out but does have a key for the glove box, doors and trunk. Whereas, the MX-5 employs the key in the end of the fob also for the ignition if the fob battery goes. So, I was wondering whether the new key fob would indeed work on the 3. (You just hold the fob up near the keyless ignition button to start the 3 when the fob battery goes out.)
Went to a local (Albemarle Lock & Safe) outfit and had the reprogramming done. It took a bit longer than usual; so, it was $100 instead of their usual $50 they charge. Last thing they did was to cut the key on the key fob (using my wife's fob key).
Someone on one of the 3 forums suggested programming the MX-5 to be the same. Think he overlooked the key in the key fob. Would have had to change out the locks that the key fob key works to do this. No.
The wife has pinned both my Mazda fobs inside my fanny pack with safety pins and a rubber band, to keep me from accidently dragging out the fob when getting other stuff. Normally, I plain don't use either key fob. They just sit in my fanny pack.
