I was pulling my small (converted truck frame) trailer around in the snow today, with my jm 254. The right rear wheel broke through the frost, and I noticed the front wheels were suddenly not pulling. I did not hear anything break..... Is there a weak spot where I should start looking? I will be pulling it into the garage tomorrow morning, and popping the tranny cover off to see if (hopefully) the problem is in there, but I doubt it. Darn.....

Is it possible that your 2wd/4wd select lever simply slipped out of 4wd?

there is a roll pin in drive shaft coupling, check your parts breakdown, drop shaft & check

Happened to me also (MT180D).
In my case the roll pin that the 2/4WD shifter engaged simply worked itself out of the shifter shaft.
Not saying tht that is where your trouble is but always a maybe.

If there is no big noises the repair is probably fairly simple.
Yeah, I know--first to find it!

Most of the time, the circlip in the 4 x 4 shaft will break which will allow the 8 mm ball bearings to fall out of the coupler.Remove the rubber sleeve in the middle of the 4 x 4 cover and slide the 2-ends together, look for the ball bearings as you do this.If you see them thats the problem.Since you did not hear a "pop" or any thing grind it's prob.something minor like this.If you need any parts we keep them in stock

Might be a bit premature to drop the drive shaft housing. The shaft is coupled at the rear with ball bearings and a spring, and at the front with your roll pin and more ball bearings. Consider that the front diff input shaft turns whenever the front wheels rotate. If the rear coupler let loose, the shaft and probably some bearings would be banging around inside its housing. And if the front coupler let go, I'd expect at least the sound of ball bearings rattling inside the housing.

Thanks, all.

I will be pulling it in to the garage this morning to have a look, and these suggestions will definitely help me save time. It occurs to me that - the jm has 2wd only, the superduty has no 4wd, as the cardan joint wore out, and it is in for rebuild, even my wolverine has no 4wd. That is a different story, as the rear wheels have no drive. I am down to a '72 dodge plow truck, which is slowly falling apart....

My Jinma 224 did exactly the same thing last week. The circlip holding the baal bearings in the front splineshaft dislodged.

Takes less than 15 mintues to inspect for ball bearings.

FWIW,

5/16 = .3125
8mm = ~.3150

The bearing that I had to reference measured .3145

.003 is the thickness of a piece of copy paper.

If I didn't have 8mm on the way, I'd use 5/16.

Agreed. Since the bearings on both ends are held in place by spring tension, the diameter isn't critical - as long as all six on one end are the same. You could have six 8mm on one end and six 5/16" on the other, it should work just fine.

OK, got it apart, and the external snap ring is broken, which allowed everything to wander around. I did find all 12 bearings, now I just need to get to the snap ring store.....
