RickB has a good point. Had a tractor that had 3 loose disk to wheel bolts. Every once in a while made a loud clunk/bang like a major driveline problem. Got off and checked and things looked OK till parked just right and could move a bolt. Took me a while to figure it out.

Yep, after Rick mentioned that I remember my Ford making a noise and it was the disk to wheel bolts.

I know you said it is coming from the back and you well think I'm nuts. Check the front axle center for play and make sure you grease it. The popping sound well sound like it is coming from the rear if you are setting on the tractor.
