I bought a used 2186 with a 48 inch deck last spring. Tractor and deck needed a lot of TLC but is working great now and really does a nice job of cutting the lawn with new Gator blades. But the only complaint I have with it is the reverse speed. Forward is really fast. I think the specs say 5.5 mph. But reverse seems really slow by comparison even at full throttle. Can anyone tell me if there is any kind of adjustment for the reverse speed and, if so, how to do it.

seems I recollect seeing a similar post or 2 some time back where the fix was to replace worn plastic bushings in the pivot arms underneath to take out the "slop"...? might take a look, but would prolly entail dropping the deck :(

I have a 2084 Cub, the reverse speed can be adjusted on it. It requires the removal of the center console cover, jacking the rear of the unit up and adjusting the cam linkage on the left side. I would suggest a visit to a cub dealer and talk to the service manager and see if he will provide instructions with a print out from the service manual.

If memory serves me correctly, you can adjust the rearward speed. Typicall it will reduce your forward speed if you increase the rearward speed, just takes some adjusting to get the right balance. I remember playing around with the adjustments on a 2000 series several years ago. I want to say theres a threaded rod?? that you adjust the setting nut....but don't quote me. Drop the mower, look underneath at the linkage and it'll be easy to see where it adjusts. A good dousing of wd40 after you adjust it wouldn't hurt either.

no you do not need to remove anything, on the right side of unit have a look at the reverse pedal, you should see 2 1/4 self tapping screws and a slide adjustment.back off the screws and raise the reverse pedal.if the unit is to old to have these adj. visit a cub dealer and replace the two links to adjustable ones.2186 is of newer vintage and should have the adjustable links (no need to drop deck to see) i have added to many of the first 2000 series with the same prob...glad.

I adjusted my 3235 for minimum rear speed to get the max forward speed but it was still too slow for my lacking. I made a bracket, picture shown in an old post years ago, that raises the forward pedal a couple inches and give it more travel. This allowed me to get more forward speed while still having enough rear speed.

My two 2000 series can increase reverse speed without losing any forward speed. As mentioned, just a simple linkage adjustment. The lawyers make 'em set reverse at minimum. While you're under there, think about disconnecting the reverse kill switch. That's equally dumb to have the deck cut off whenever reversing.
