I've been looking for a hydraulic motor that might fit my application (DIY skidder winch.) My google-fu seems to be lacking. Here are the specs of the electric motor that I'd like to replace with a hydraulic one.

It's an old Tulsa winch with a 280:1 reduction. Are those RPM's Feasible?

I have looked at the performance graph for your winch motor.

Remembering that electric winch people often greatly over rate the spec's, I see 2,000 rpm's and 16 lb-ft of torque as being reasonable.

There are hydraulic motors such as this one by Parker Hannefin

Nichols M4 speeds up to 3,000 to 7,500 on an intermittent basis
Torque 39 to 230 lb-in . Divide by 12 to get lb-ft yields 3.25 to 19 lb-ft

In practical terms this does not seem like a good conversion. Just connecting the hydraulic motor to your winch will likely require a machinist.

Electrical winches are only intended and designed for short operating periods. A hydraulic motor is intended for much more prolonged operating situations.

You could invest a lot of $ and time and have the hydraulic motor rip the guts out of your winch.

If you keep the torque of the motor more or less the same as the electric motor, you should be fine.

To limit the torque, you need to limit the pressure, so a pressure relief valve for the motor is needed.

Another option could be getting a low speed, High torque motor and hook it up directly to the drum of the winch.

I went this route on my homemade hydraulic winch for the tractor but I built mine from scratch. I just added a set of gears that allows me to disengage from the drum and have free spool option.

Let us know how this goes. I'm interesting too see that conversion.

Thanks for the information. As to overusing the winch, it should be able to pull its own full spool without issue? The winch itself is 100% stock, just changing what provides the RPM's on input.

I can also input power after the worm gear only reducing RPMs to 14:1. I am keeping those options in my back pocket.
