You will need to split the tractor between the engine and clutch housing and remove the front transmission cover. The forward / reverse synchro is on the input shaft behind the front cover. You shouldn't need to remove the whole transmission unless you find more wrong. Investing in a service manual will make life easier. $125 manual will save a lot versus paying a repair shop. I split mine in the shed with a rolling floor jack and jackstands. Drive some wooden wedges between the front axle and side frames before rolling it apart to keep the front half from tipping. Don't forget to remove the detent ball and spring before removing the F/R shift rail after you take off the transmission front cover. Guess how I know this.
