I am looking at getting an ABI Attachments 50 cubic ft PTO driven manure spreader and want to know if anyone has used the MT 125 for this type of application. Would be interested in your results and thoughts.

whats The horsepower of a MT125 ? To me it sure looks like just about any sub compact tractor shouldn’t have much trouble pulling a 50 cubic foot spreader.

It’s a sub-compact with about 17hp at the PTO. It weight is listed at 1440lbs. Thats not a lot of weight. How flat is OP’s ground and how much weight can he add to the tractor so that the tail doesn’t wag the dog? The empty spreader weighs about 850 lbs.
For comparison, 1 cubic foot of water weighs about 62.3 pounds.
It might pull easily on flat, firm, ground, but you could also get in trouble on hilly or soft ground too. Maybe you can pick your days when to spread.
Regarding weight, also note as you empty a spreader, the weight is lifted from the tongue off the rear wheels and you have less traction.

What type of material will you be spreading? Dry fluffy manure or wet compacted hay and straw packed manure? Will you be loading with a pitchfork or tractor and loader? If dry fluffy I doubt you would have much trouble. If straw packed wet tangled matted loaded with loader I suspect you may run into trouble with limited PTO power especially if heaped full. Level full suspect it would grunt but probably chew through. You plug it once at you learn..

we used to pull 160 bushel spreader with 5600 Ford or and Old M Farmall.

Thanks all, the stats listed above are correct for the MT 125 tractor. As to the terrain it is mostly flat, just a gentle slope or two. As to the manure will be spreading horse manure with shavings, not straw or the like. I compost the manure in a pile currently but would build at least two pens to crumble and turn during the summer and winter, spreading in the fall and spring. The ground will be a combination of farm ground and pasture. Would definitely want to have dry ground for spreading.

As to overloading the spreader, I have used my tractors backhoe to empty an overloaded wet load of manure for a friend so well aware of the issues with a full load of wet manure. That was a nasty job!

My opinion is that under the conditions you describe I believe you would have little to no problems pulling that spreader

I found a used ABI 50 CBFT ground driven spreader. The MT 125 pulls it like it is not even there. Would still like a PTO driven model but this will definitely work!!
