I am looking for my first tractor which I want to use for plowing/tilling, brush hog, gravel/dirt work (some), and lifting logs (occassionaly, not even very month). Tractor would pretty much just be used on weekends, and then probably not even every weekend. Have 40 acres.

I am looking for
40-50hp
4wd/MFWD
Loader & bucket

I have found an older tractor (1996) for around 15k, 50hp with a lift capacity of around 2500. So its an older/heavier tractor which would be good for lifting....

.....but.....

I started looking at other tractors (LS XR4046 & Mahindra 4025 & Kioti DK55 (2yrs old, 300hrs)) and they are only 6-7k more than the 1996 one. Is the extra money worth a new tractor that has less hp but the same lifting capacity? Just because it can lift the same or more, doesn't mean the tractor itself can handle it compared to and older heavier tractor.

Also, it is 6-7k which I could use to buy other things, implements, or tools.
Its an investment either way, I am just having a hard time justifying the extra money when the older tractor will do everything I need.

"Large tractors can do small jobs, but small tractors can't do large jobs" sticks with me when looking at these newer compacts.
I do want the ability to lift a larger log when the time comes and put it on a trailer.

Just looking for thoughts, even though they will probably just confuse me more. lol

Re: LS XR4046/Kioti DK vs older tractor

You didn't tell us what brand and hours condition etc. That makes it hard to tell value but this unit is 18 years old seems high. Some brands hold value better and new you get warranty or a least look around for more used equipment.

opps, its a John Deere 5200, with 4600 hours. It was used for brush hogging and hay bales. It's in nice condition, everything works and it still being used by the seller. Seller bought it at an auction and talked to the previous owner which is how I know what it was used for.

I have no idea on the value of the JD, but that seems very high for an 18 year old tractor with 4600 hours. I'm very happy with my 4046 and it will do all you are wanting. I'm sure the DK would too.

I just looked up the stats on the JD 5200 that sold for $20,000 brand new. The weight is not that much more than a current model DK50 Kioti. I don't think I would pay $15K for an 18 year old tractor with 4600 hours. While the engine may run fine now, that is very high hours for a CUT. Even though the options are several thousand more, I would have to go with a lower hour tractor if buying used OR just step up and buy a new one for just a few thousand more. If you have to pay $22K for a used tractor, I would have to price a new one and then evaluate if it is worth it to me for the extra money.

Tractor prices have really gone up in the last 3-4 years and I really haven't keep current on them but looking at what some of todays selling prices on TBN, I am sure glad I got my tractors in 2010. I got my 70HP LS P7010 for about the same as a 50 HP is selling for today. It is a good tractor for heavy lifting (3500# on the FEL) by the way and if you can find a low hour used one, it would be a good deal for your (I think)

Now I have found a Kioti DS4510 with loader, box blade, & brush cutter for 23K, geesh this just gets more difficult.

I wouldn't go near the used high hour tractor. Try not to set your price range on what they want for that unit. With 40 acres you'll find plenty of uses for what you end up buying. Get the best tractor to fit your prioritized needs, then buy implements as needed over time. The initial investment is most important. Try not to get too hung up on new vs. old, get what's best for budget and use.
