New Holland Ls170
2001 New Holland LS170. Unable to remove hydro filter, bent filter wrench trying.

I recently bought the machine for dirt cheap from family, knowing it hadn't been well kept recently (been a back up for years). Just got done doing full service (oil/filter, replace fuel separator/inline filter, replace fuel lines, flush radiator/replace hoses, replace air filter). Got everything back together, fired it up for a hydro flush via installing a drain hose on service port. After successful flush, went to replace hydro filter. Torqued the **** out of the filter wrench, no luck. Hit filter wrench with rubber mallet, then 12 LB sledge. Put a 4 foot steel pipe on end of filter wrench handle, bent the wrench to ****, still nothing. Filter is 6 years old and approx. 500 hours, machine is approx. 2800 hours. Any help at all is greatly appreciated.

P.S. machine runs well most of the time, occasionally will bog down under heavy constant simultaneous use of all hydraulic (driving while tilting and raise/lowering bucket all at once). It's even stalled a few times, was hoping service would help with this. Couldn't find these symptoms in service manual.

I have had good luck on stubborn filters using a chain wrench;
Chain Wrenches - Heavy Duty | Reed Manufacturing

If that doesn't work I had one filter that actually tore the can loose from the base,
I ended up using a hammer and chisel to walk the base around after it finally moved about an inch it spun right off.

I had a similar problem getting the hydraulic filter off my new tractor for it’s first filter change. My regular filter wrenches were just bending, so I got a strap wrench similar to this at Napa.

https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/...l+Filter+Wrench&keywordInput=strap+wrench

This style takes 1/2” socket tools. It worked well since I could use a 12” extension to get in front of the rear tire and put a breaker bar on it.

The only drawback to these is the filter needs to be really clean...like cleaned with alcohol clean before trying it or the strap will get greasy and not grab the filter.

That strap wrench that 3Lfarms recommended is the best filter wrench I ever used, especially if you only have access from the bottom of the tractor, and not really any space to move a wrench handle. With that strap wrench, you can use a long socket extension, and you're good to go. Just be certain that the wrench you get has a long enough strap to handle your biggest filter (likely the hydraulic fluid filter).

Good luck.

I once had to use a 30" pipe wrench to break one loose after all else had failed. If you have the space and the wrench, that will break it free. However you proceed take your time.
