Cub Cadet SLT1554
I've used this site as a major source of research in buying the new SLT1554. But I must also say that I'd almost missed out on a GREAT machine in reading all the slash/burn comments about the 1000, and 1500 series cub tractors on these boards?

I'd like to first ask if so many of the "small cub bashers" either traded up due to ego, or because they really had need for a bigger tractor in the first place and bought on the cheap? I paid a pretty penny for my LT and based on many of the posts that I'd read, I'd almost bought another brand or mower altogether.

I've got 1 acre of mainly flat but some pretty good rolling hill land as well. While I know that many here are tracotor "OG's there are many of us out there who feel pretty good about our little cubs. I laughed pretty hard at one post that made fun of cub LT's for having a ten year life expectancy. Well I'll tell you that if my tractor lasts that long, it'll be time to get a new one. Right along with a new wife, dog, and a convertible to go with my midlife crisis...

What I'd like most is to start a thread that will provide some of the best ways, tips and tricks to use to keep our little tractors working smoothly.

Many posts here complained about the tran belt on the LTs. But my dealer drove my 1554 into my trailer at what I'd estimate at better tnan a 35 degree angle when I picked it up last saturday.

I'd really like to devote this thread to the TRUTH about what tasks you can really do with an LT, and how we can improve performance with various tires, accessories and etc.

Things that would be good to comment on are:

1. Really how steep a hill can you mow up, and down a hill with a bet driven tractor? And if you did experience a stripped belt, were you doing something crazy and ridiculous to cause it?

2. What is the tallest grass and roughest terrain condition that you have experienced with your LT?

3. How well does your LT perform during snow removal? Is a snow blade a real option (especially if you live below the DelMarVA peninsula), or must you use a thrower?

4. Attachments like Johnny Buckets and other real work attachments that you have used to get the most out of your LT?

5. Anything else that you have personally used that would be of real use to the LT owner?

While I know that many feel that cub sold out in making a belt driven tractor there are alot of folk who want a really good product to keep up there yards and want to choose cub to help them.

Congrats on your purchase! The SLT1554's are nice looking machines. Nothing small about them. They are taller, longer, higher, etc.. than the 2500 if I remember correctly. 54" for 1 acre? You'll have your mowing done in no time. As far as belt driven transaxles, they are awesome on a well designed machine. Both of my JD's were belt drive. The tires would dig into the ground or the machine would do a wheelie before the belt would slip. No problems there. On the other hand, my MTD yard machines LT belt drive was horrible. That had the 'transmatic' transaxle though.

Great Post! I've been waiting for someone to come along who had something positive to say about the LT's. I purchased a CC LT 1046, although not as big or powerful as yours, I do enjoy using it. I thought this board would give me some insight on the 1046, but man was I wrong! All I've seen on this board about the LT's was how cheap and inferior they were. Actually started to regret my purchase because of it. As far as using my "baby" cub, I use it to mow about 1 acre of fairly flat land and I've used it to pull a home made grader and utility cart. So far no problems. Again thank you for the positive post on the LT's. I look forward to hearing more about your LT experiences.

Tom- A question as I'm considering a smaller Cub, how do you like your 1046 ground speed wise? Does it cut as fast as you'd like, or do you find the ground speed too slow?

Sam- Same question regarding your 1554.

Any other actual owners of these smaller tractors care to comment? Any feedback here would be most appreciated as my one and only concern is they claim only 5.2 mph (and thats with the mower not engaged and not using cruise)

Syncro,
I haven't really had any problems with the speed of the tractor. It'll go about 5.5mph forward, but I don't mow that fast. I like to take my time because I only have about an acre to mow. I like to think I do a better job cutting slower. Maybe it'd just my perception. So far, it's a great "baby" cub!
