:welcome: to TBN

Google "JD Service tech manual LX178" and a number of different places pop up.. as well as your JD dealer can get you one.

They are great to have when working on your machine.

Thanks to all who responded.
I finally acquired the JD LX178 service manual. Trouble shooting of my LX178 revealed a dead cylinder.
Does anyone have knowledge if it possible to remove a piston while the engine is installed in the tractor? ie. remove the radiator, cyl heads, exhaust manifold...............
to gain access to a crank case cover where I would have access to the connecting rods.

"dead cylinder", meaning what by "dead" ? Best I can think of, means not moving when the other cylinder is moving.

Excuse me. Dead........... in that when I pull the right hand spark plug wire from the running engine there is no change in rpm. Plug is wet with fuel when removed from the engine. Spark exists at the plug. Compression exist but I don't have a compression gauge for it. I'm suspecting bad rings (worse case) or a bad seating valve.
The engine will not run when the left plug lead is removed.

Thanks for responding!

Thinking of pulling a piston may be getting ahead of yourself. I suppose that you get grab a loaner gauge from an auto parts store and see what you have, then do a ring test if you were curious. Have you tried a new spark plug for starts? If you are suspecting a valve, pull the valve cover.

Thank you for responding. Already confirmed that it's not a spark plug. Should break down and buy a compression tester. Believe I found the answer to my initial question............can a piston be pulled while the engine case is remains in the chassis?
please refer to attached picture; John Deere LX178 FD44V 17HP Kawasaki Liquid Cooled Crankcase / Block & Oil Sump | eBay

And that answer would be a NO
and I'm not sure I want to involve myself.
Considering selling via parting out mower parts

Hi Tom

Glad I took your advice. Obtained a compression gauge and found zero compression in the cylinder. Pulled valve cover to find bent push rod and intake valve stuck in open position. Gently mallitized valve stem then worked it back and forth a few times until valve traveled smoothly. Pressurized cylinder with valves closed to find no leakage. Think I got lucky. Thanks for guiding me in the right direction.
