John Deere LX188 & 180
Hello All,

This is my first post after lurking around the forum for some time. I recently inherited a 1998 JD LX188 that's been unloved over the last 18 years. The tractor starts no problem even cold with the throttle all the way down at idle but dies once you try to increase it. I had the carb off and cleaned it. This seems to have improved things slightly as I can now slowly increase the throttle and it will rev but hesitates and stutters before evening out. I checked the fuel shutoff solenoid and its working correctly. It ran fine when it was put away in the fall and the fuel drained from the carb.(I put fresh high test in it last week)

Anybody have any ideas?

Thanks,

Eric

good fuel in tank? Fuel filter, gas lines open (not collapsed), fuel pickup in tank clear, fuel pump functioning as spec (delivery over time).

Yes new fuel in tank as of last week and new JD fuel filter. I'm not sure about the fuel pump, when I put the carb back on after cleaning it only turned over 4-5 time before it fired so I assumed the pump is OK. What should the delivery rate be?

The fuel lines were replaced two years ago but I'll check them again. I'll also take a look at the pickup tube in the tank.

How big is the tank, I would add some seafoam 1oz to 1 gallon of fuel. Setting idle you go for the "sweet spot" according to my john deere manual it is the point (highest RPM attained) between where it is begins to pickup RPM and fall off in RPM. My WOT is set using the governor linkage where the throttle cable connects. Yours may be different. It depends which engine you have.

You idle mixture is too lean. If you have this carb:
John Deere - Parts Catalog

Then you can adjust the idle mixture ratio. The idle adjustment screw is item 13 in the diagram.

If you have this carb:
John Deere - Parts Catalog

Then you can not adjust the idle mixture ratio.

When you cleaned the carb, did you completely disassemble it?

Use carb cleaner and a fine piece of wire to clean the jet openings?

And compressed air to blow out any debris?

Thanks guys,

I was able to spend some more time in the garage tonight and it seems it was the governor that was binding on the throttle plate. Its now running as it should.

Again thanks all for the pointers.
