LX277 Oil Leak and PTO replace

I have a LX277 17HP Kawasaki engine. OK so after having help to tear down everything to remove the engine to change gasket, I am now trying to put back together. We had an awful time removing the PTO clutch and then I ordered a new one off the internet. I must have dropped the PTO (the old one ) a 100 times and the new one 50 or more. New PTO only has two wires one red and one black, old one has three one black and blue together and one black separate. Of course the connectors did not match up (new one) so right now I have the old PTO on and new one just waiting. Does the upper pulley (drive belt) have a key or is it free turning ?? I am hoping that someone has had to remove the PTO and other pulley before. Oh and right now the mower starts but won't go forward or reverse, well I did get 12 feet and then nothing. Oil leak fixed now but need some help especially now that it is about to be mowing season. Thanks

Your question "does the upper pulley (drive belt) have a key or is it free turning ?? " the only one ?

Or is there more you need help with?

For the key, try to find your mower model in jdparts.com (it is free registration). Should show a key or not, as well as give the part number.

I looked, and it shows a shaft key, part no. M45460 for that drive pulley.
